We spent an evening with @stephenfry.bsky.social on his tour in NZ and I can confirm the world needs more Stephen Frys.
@ejwillingham.bsky.social seems you were spot on with your assessment
Not that much but racism was/is deeply ingrained, but less talked about. However, when Merkel opened the borders to help out millions of Syrians, a clear shift to the right happened, also affecting other European countries. Progressive indigenous policies in NZ under Jacinda had similar consequences
The anonymity of social media might be contributing. And the tendency to counteract when things change, perceivably not in oneβs own interest. The empowerment of women is feared to disadvantage (white) men; the response to Obama was overt racism/Trump. Itβs very similar in Europe and New Zealand.
Awful. I grew up in Germany, and although Iβm sure there were plenty of men in the 80s that thought that way, it seemed not mainstream at all. Do you think it is getting more mainstream in the States/Texas or has always been that level since when we grew up?
Congratulations how amazing

Weβre all hurting. I donβt have all the answers.
But I know that things wonβt be this bleak forever.
I ran against a MAGA incumbent in a βsafe redβ district in KY as a progressive, openly queer, 28-year-old trans woman.
And I won.

Hi Emily, I am one of the last gen Xes, and though our generation has many problems, many still have values against racism, pro-women, and for action against climate change. I cannot recall wide-spread pro-rape messages like βwomen are propertyβ which circulate on social among young men- worrying.
I know I shouldnβt watch a horror show before going to bed but did it again oh no #nzelection

How exciting these ideas of Miller et al. (& how many new questions they raise):
βThis new perspective is part of mounting evidence that the neural basis of cognition is not continuous.β
βWhat we are proposing is the infrastructure by which volition acts.β
Interesting this On/Off pattern of neuron activity in lateral PFC during spatial working memory tasks. Wondering if this can be generalized to all working memory networks (eg does it apply to verbal working memory networks as well?)
