A really good piece from #GCN here and especially the discussions at the end and the final point about needing some visions and plans - that really is the thing lacking in the UK.

Good news for anybody for cycles along the city stadium cycle path. π
A screen capture of the electronic voting results at a meeting of Newcastle City Council showing 22 Yes, 28 No.
At last night's council meeting there was a motion on winter maintenance.
An amendment to 'Investigate gritting those parts of major arterial pedestrian/cycle routes susceptible to freezing' was not passed, as more than half of those councillors present voted against it.
No. Only roads plus a few pavments in busy shopping areas.
The amendment, which a majority of councillors voted against, didn't suggest actually treating pavements and cycle routes.
More than half the councillors at the meeting voted against even looking at if it was possible to make the city safer for people walking and cycling on icy days.

The city council recently release a master plan for Forth Yards, a future development west of the city centre.
We have taken a look and considered the impact on cycling facilities. Read what we found and find out how to contribute on the link below. newcycling.org/2025/12/fort...
Active travel groups call for clear targets on walking and cycling in England Exclusive: Groups including British Cycling call for active travel strategy to be put on equal footing with road and rail
Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy 3 (CWIS3) Dear Secretary of State, Active travel directly advances all five of the Governmentβs missions β improving health, creating opportunity, delivering safer streets, driving economic growth and meeting our decarbonisation commitments. To realise this potential, the forthcoming Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy 3 (CWIS3) must move from good intentions to a clear, long-term, fully deliverable national plan comparable to other strategic transport programmes. Currently, CWIS3βs proposed objectives, βensuring people are safe to travel activelyβ and βensuring people feel it is an easy choiceβ, are open to interpretation and not measurable.

NEW: 50+ transport and health groups have written to the Government calling for clear targets in the upcoming Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy 3, as well as a comprehensive plan for a national active travel network, matching the long-term strategic focus given to roads.
In conjunction with @northeastptug.bsky.social we recently wrote to the city council to urge it to work towards making New Bridge Street and Blackett Street match the vision that has been sold to residents. newcycling.org/2025/10/the-...

Lots of people joined SPACE for Fenham and Arthur's Hill on their Glow ride last night as part of the @cyclinguk.bsky.social "My ride. Our right" campaign to call for safer streets.
See pictures from the event and a video explaining what it was about in the gallery below.
This is our work! Nice to see it getting picked up
Highlights For marginalised street users mode separation is the key to human-scale movement. Streets conducive to walking and cycling have functional, safe and accessible design. Professionals must approach street design, regulation and user behaviour holistically. Combinations of influencing factors persuade people to either use or avoid a street. There are no easy fixes to the public realm that will work for all non-drivers.
"The single most important behaviour, design or regulation for creating streets conducive to walking and cycling, was physical separation between the modes"
We've got a new study out, learning from a broad mixture of street users, planners and designers

SPACE for Fenham and Arthur's Hill have organised a Glow ride as part of Cycling UK's "My ride on Wednesday. Our right" campaign calling for safer streets, especially for women riding after dark.
Meet at the Civic Centre for 18:30. Full details: m.facebook.com/events/13823...
The council have now opened this route. Thank you to those in the council and @mikecookson.bsky.social for getting this fixed. The signs are still in place but can be ignored.
Let us know if you see issues like this wherever you cycle. It can be fixed!
Still no update on this unfortunately. Some Cyclists dismount signs have been quickly put up.
This is discriminatory to those with mobility cycles and blocks larger cargo bikes.
A safe diversion needs to be in place or the fencing moved.
If you notice something blocking the way on a route you use let us know. We can help contacting the council to get it removed or understand why it's there. We can also share it on social media so people know of any delays or interruptions they might face.

The route into Shieldfield has been blocked today by Newcastle Council. We have contacted them as there is no notice of a road closure that we can see.

A Grey bike with two small side tables on the rear rack one facing the ground the other on top facing the sky.
Spotted two people carrying bikes on their backs while cycling yesterday. I recently carried a couple of side tables home on my bike.
Have you carried anything weird and wonderful while cycling recently?

First time on a new @my-metro.bsky.social - very exciting moment. Thank you to everyone who helped ensure there is space for my bike. Most people will never know the work that went into making this happen.
