Nova Scotians will not let up protesting until all cuts are reversed #HoustonCuts

So far $56 million were reversed, still pushing for the rest to be reversed.
LOUDER!!!
Ah...if only Nova Scotia had such a viewpoint of culture, heritage and geography. envy as he screams at Tim. www.theguardian.com/books/2026/m...
Hundreds turned out in Wolfville today to protest the Nova Scotia government's draconian funding cuts to arts, music, books, culture & heritage programs.
Tim Houston - do you no longer care about jobs, rural communities & our quality of life?

Houston, we have a problem ... you're killing the arts in Nova Scotia!
Do the right thing - restore funding to publishing and arts programs and protect our culture.

At a time of threatening American expansionism, cultural expression that reflects and is made by Nova Scotians is more important than ever. Books aren't just entertainment. They start debates. Spark ideas. Fuel revolution. They are a critical part of a healthy, functioning democracy.
À scathing indictment of these budget cuts from a former colleague. An Open Letter to Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston and Hants East MLA John A. MacDonald www.halifaxexaminer.ca/commentary/a...
The day I first met Sherri, we at the law courts working on our own projects, and I was so impressed with how hard she was working that I had to sheepishly introduce myself. She has always had that work ethic.
Her good work would not exist were it not for Transition Year Program Houston just cut
Arts & culture funding in Nova Scotia just got absolutely gutted by our Provincial Government.
Send a letter to your MLA. ESPECIALLY if you live outside the HRM, OH MY GOSH PLEASE DO THIS. Your voices disproportionately matter here.

In light of the proposed cuts to the Nova Scotia arts sector, we are requesting help from our friends and community. Please take the time to read this piece and help in whatever what you can.

Nova Scotia cut arts funding by 32%.
The 2026-27 budget slashes $14M from arts and culture—closing museums, killing or gutting 72 programs, and putting nearly 14,000 culture jobs at risk. Musicians, theatres, festivals—all on the chopping block.
Tell your MLA to reverse course

This took about twenty seconds (it comes with a very eloquent pre-written letter), and I've already gotten a response from @claudiachenderns.bsky.social's office expressing their concern. Some suggestions included in the response are below:

The provincial budget is framed as “Defending Nova Scotia.” Defence implies protecting what sustains us. Cultural and social infrastructure stabilize communities already managing demographic change, economic volatility, and social strain. newdawn.ca/2026/02/26/d...
Canadian publishers are deeply disappointed by Nova Scotia's cancellation of the Publishers Assistance program. Support for local publishers has been reduced from $700,000 to $0, making NS the only province that does not invest in its own publishers. @nsgov.bsky.social publishers.ca/nova-scotia-...
Spread across all 800-thousand-plus personal income tax filers in Nova Scotia, the savings from these cuts amount to about $153 per year.
A little more than $12/month.
@machzy.bsky.social did thspreadsheet before I got around to it. Thanks!
Art, walking, community, all things that have meaning to our lives here in Nova Scotia that the Houston government can’t seem to see.
Houston's budget is called 'Defending Nova Scotia'. Defending from what, exactly? In an era of threatening American expansionism, cultural expression that reflects & is created by Nova Scotians is more important than ever. Now we have two threats: Trump, and the call coming from inside the house.
Tim Houston continues his attack on the institutions that make this democracy worthwhile

Nova Scotia’s publishing industry latest target of budget cuts
Removing $700,000 in provincial support leaves Nova Scotia as the only province that does not support its book publishers and authors

"It is baffling to see the extent of the cuts, on a sector that has for generations been asked to do more with less. A sector that is intrinsic to our understanding of ourselves as Nova Scotians, a sector that ... employs more Nova Scotians than fisheries, forestry, and mining combined."

Writers in schools, artists in school, perform N.S.
These are huge cuts to education in this province disguised as a few cuts to grants
Here’s the full list of Houston’s cuts Have a look at show your friends. There are pages and pages, everything from R&I for the Brain Repair Centre and Acute and Primary Health Care to Hope Blooms, the Domestic Violence Court, and the NS Apprenticeship Agency Program.
Anyone have this is spreadsheet form? I'd like to total the $ amount of cuts and divide by number of NSian income tax payers.
I'm expecting that the cost to me in responding to fundraising appeals will exceed tax savings
I understand fiscal responsibility and I agree with many of the areas that ARE receiving funding (resource extraction is a hard no). But we deserve to know how we ended up with a deficit of 1.24b when the budget was balanced before the PCs took over. Audit pls.
