A cartoon by Stephen Collins showing a young bird being embarrassed by his parents' birdsong βΒ which is here depicted as an unambiguous call for sex. The young bird finds this gross and also old-fashioned; he prefers to use Tinder.
Quite a while ago now (and yes I know almost no female birds sing) but ...
My books bring to light the alienation that was already present in my readers

I totally understand the disadvantage of being outside a university system with library subscriptions etc. But did you know you can read 100 articles a month for free on JSTOR, which collects a huge number of academic journals? I discovered this recently and it's a godsend

I have managed to boycott Amazon completely for years now β I go to companies' websites and order from them directly, or I used eBay βΒ and I swear to god I've saved money this way as well as karma
There's still time to respond to the consultation on the awful proposed changes to settlement rules

The first bar of the first movement of Bach's Cantata BWV1, showing a low F as the first note in the piece
Opening of first movement of BWV1, the first piece in the Bach catalogue (though not the first he wrote) shown below.
And ...
The first note is an F.
I think I need to lie down.
