I don't recall, TBH, but I'm certain he likely made the connection later. I think the dragon was an adult tattoo, which makes me think it's probably primarily Niv, but there are some implications around Nic affecting his life as well, which might explain why it isn't explicitly Niv.

Ral actually worked for Bolas when he was younger, the events of which led to his spark igniting!

Have we ever gotten any sort of confirmation on the meaning of his tattoo? I always assumed it was representative of the impact Niv, Bolas, or both had on him.
