They had a waxed cardboard containers” plug and were covered by a paper seal you had to tear off. That plug usually had a little tab on it so you could keep pulling it on and off through the life of the quart/half gallon of milk.

I honestly don’t know why we did away with waxed cardboard containers. They worked and they didn’t kill anything.
