It’s too late to consider literacy when the child arrives in Pre-K. The cuts to Head Start are criminal. Parents & caretakers are the first and most important teachers. Most Americans 0-4 are neglected & “taken care of” by plopping them in front of a screen to watch - they all need Head Start.

I don’t click on .com articles about literacy stats. I have a degree in secondary education, worked in secondary education. I am painfully aware of the literacy rate in Maine. The biggest problem we face is the failure of support systems for low SES families. NCLB does nothing for them.

Investors instructed the MBAs to put profit over quality, squeezing the food & labor budget. To an investment banker it’s a profit center, not a restaurant. Frozen pizza is as good or better for less than half the cost. No one goes in at 7am to make the dough and cut up veggies for the salad bar.

Worked @ Pizza Slut 35 years ago. The dough was made fresh every morning, placed in the pans and “proofed.” The long lost salad bars were stocked with fresh vegetables cut up daily, not out of plastic bags. Now it’s all preprocessed in a factory. Buy a frozen DiGiorno for half the cost.
