we don't have to live this way.
"[H]ospitals, schools, and water and sanitation systems — upon which children depend to survive — have been attacked, damaged, or destroyed ... Nothing justifies the killing and maiming of children, or the destruction and disruption of essential services that children depend on."

IN PRAISE OF JEREMY BOWEN
His Today programme monologue on Trump, war in Iran, and the history of the Middle East was exactly how the BBC should be reporting on the world.

This story is such a bad example of journalists *creating* news. They sent out a survey to 5,000 GPs. 752 replied. 540 said they’d never refused to give a fit note to someone who said they had mental health issues. 162 said they had refused, which is over a fifth. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Preliminary investigations confirm what we all know: Trump and the US have blood on their hands for murdering schoolgirls in Iran
can claude turn an all night existential crisis into a morning epiphany and the produce a semester's worth of work within a weekend?
maybe im selfish but at this point i dont really give a fuck about how the laws that target us and our life-saving healthcare might also affect cis people. why is it always "and it could hurt cis people because of XYZ!" why are we not enough. why are we never enough for you all to care about.

Yesterday, a 110MW off-grid AI data center outside of Dublin was switched on - and it's powered entirely by fossil fuels. Developers went with natural gas engines (specifically RICE) to bypass the grid connection queue. They claim the engines "could" be switched to HVO, and that the project will attempt to connect to the grid "when possible". What does this mean for Ireland's climate goals? According to my estimates, this single project will increase the entire country's annual GHG emissions by ~1%. Assumptions: - The project seems to be using Rolls Royce (mtu) 4000 Series RICE which have an electrical efficiency of 44% https://lnkd.in/eRX4PRuf - Modifying the NREL life cycle gas emissions factor with this efficiency yields 656.75 gCO2e/kWh https://lnkd.in/gfgs2X6P - Assuming a 90% capacity factor because AI hyperscale data centers run near 24/7 to recoup massive GPU costs - Ireland’s 2024 GHG emissions = 53.8 million tCO2e https://lnkd.in/ejjRgRpE hashtag#DataCenters hashtag#Sustainability hashtag#ArtificialIntelligence

Ireland's new fossil-fuelled #Petrotech data center will increase Ireland's **total** (everything, not just the power sector) emissions by ~1%
Absolutely nuts. A 1% national increase - for what? Come on boosters, explain why this is worth it 🫠

Earlier this month, my state of Australia banned a particular phrase associated with Palestine liberation that refers to two bodies of water in the Levant. It's been kind of downplayed because "they'll only arrest people who are using it to menace!" No, they're just arresting everyone lol

Often, I have an idea for a piece but it's not until I do the iterative work of writing the words down, reading them, and imagining what another reader might think that I realize that I was missing steps in my argument that I wouldn't have filled in if I hadn't tried to write it down.
Someone just posted about how they don't care if their students use AI as long as the text conveys the ideas the students meant to convey. The thing is, you don't know exactly what you think until you write it. And if some prefab thing pops up, you're liable to decide that was what you thought.

So because #Ryanair in 2024 treated a passenger to a 13-hour delay and €890 in costs for a new flight, and then simply ghosted her, an Austrian court today impounded one of its airplanes at Linz airport. ooe.orf.at/stories/3345...
My friends in enterprise IT security, esp for public sector, understand what an unmitigated disaster this is. Everyone needs to operate under this assumption: our personal data has been urretrievably compromised& will be exploited, not only by a malignant govt, but also by private& foreign actors.
