GANYC held the 11th annual GANYC Apple Awards this evening, celebrating the best of NYC.

Many thanks to @gaofnyc.bsky.social for nominating EVG for a 2026 GANYC Apple Award in the "Outstanding NYC Website" category. We're honored to be included in the mix with 2 excellent sites β OldNYC and Little Kid Big City. The awards ceremony is on Monday evening.
The GANYC Membership Meeting for March was held at historic Federal Hall National Memorial, on Wall Street.
Our guest speaker was Beth Rooney, Port Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Andrew Neuman gave his "Sinatraβs New York" FAM to members earlier this week.
The tour is designed to explore his earliest performances, to swinging the nights away at the city's storied performance venues, to the classic haunts where he would unwind into the wee small hours of the morning.
Daria Walcott led an encore FAM for fellow members of her tour creation: "Grand Palaces of Retail: Ladiesβ Mile & The Fascinating History of NYCβs Gilded Age Department Stores, 1846-1910".
The tour focused on the Ladies' Mile historic district, exploring Gilded Age history.
GANYC member Kat Scaglione debuted a new tour for her fellow members in Midtown: 'Strange And Sensational Stories'.
Designed for visitors and locals alike, this tour brings to life headline-worthy stories including alligators in the sewers, eccentric celebrities with unexpected obsessions, & more.
GANYC members were treated to two tour to a great Garment District business: M&S Schmalberg.
A 4th generation family business since 1916, they create hand-made flowers used in fashion shows, Broadway & by brides. Members got to see demos of the flower-making process from century-old molds.
GANYC member Christina Stanton has written an article for Travel & Leisure: "I've Been a NYC Tour Guide for 30+ YearsβHere's the No. 1 Tip for Travelers Visiting the City".

Today the world celebrates those guiding professionals who enrich the tourism sector, and who serve as ambassadors to visitors from all over the world.

The biennial World Federation of Tourist Guide Associations (WFTGA) conference is taking place in Fukuoka, Japan. We thank all the GANYC members in attendance.
In particular, we want to congratulate our own Emma Guest-Consales for her election to the next Executive Board of the WFTGA!
GANYC members received a guided tour of 'NiyΕ« YΕ«rk'. The tour was led by Hiba Amid, the NYPL Curator for Middle Eastern & Islamic Studies.
NiyΕ« YΕ«rk explores the oft-overlooked history of Middle Eastern & North African (MENA) immigration, from the first waves in the late 19th century to present.
As part of GANYC's Certification Course, participating guides create their own unique walking tour. Joseph Knipper's tour was: "How Catholics Became New Yorkers".
Certification graduates are encouraged to give their tour to fellow members as a FAM tour, and we thank Joseph for doing so yesterday.
Thanks @gaofnyc.bsky.social for inviting me to speak last eve at Bklynβs American Legion lodge about Chief James H. Williams and the Red Caps of GC Terminal. The venue gave poignancy to Wmsβs special relationship w/vets, like the Harlem Hellfighters!

The proposed new screening rules threaten to deter visitors before they book a flight to the US, and will push them to visit other countries.
Professional licensed tour guides who are members of GANYC have already reported a major downturn in bookings from international inbound visitors.
Guides Association of New York City (GANYC) urges the US Government to halt the proposed requirement for visitors to turn over years of social media, email and phone records to enter the United States.

GANYC is sad to learn of the passing of long-time member Prudence Wright Holmes.

This is our annual celebration, after the busy holiday tour season, to unwind and rejoice with our fellow members and guests. Thanks to all who came.

Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known to an admiring world as PelΓ©, exploded on the New York soccer scene in 1975 when he joined the New York Cosmos team.
The tour told his story.
The January 2026 GANYC membership meeting took place at Ripley-Grier Studios.
We had the President's report, and reports from several committees. In lieu of a guest speaker, we had an open forum on pressing guiding industry issues.

Mark Mandel gave fellow members a great FAM to start the year, "Our Mass Transit City".
The tour explored how well over a million people commute into three main transit hubsβPenn Station, the Port Authority Bus Terminal and Grand Central Terminal.

She shares two captivating behind-the-scenes stories about the movies filmed at each spot. The twist: one story is completely true, while the other is cleverly fabricated movie βmumbo jumbo.β Each guest's mission? Spot the nonsense.
Jeremy Wilcox led his fellow GANYC members on his annual Dyker Heights FAM to explore the best of the Christmas lights extravaganza that brings thousands of visitors a night to this residential neighborhood in southern Brooklyn. π
