(notably rubs temples) I hate how Github is basically GenAIHub. That said...I like the concept of Forgejo, but I *need* a GUI application. And if you dare ask me to make a docker file for your CLI, a thing I only learned exists today, I will scream.

I'm probably going to poke around activity pub more, because while I don't agree with the devs on everything, it's sturdy and has a lot of underutilized potential.
But those are my thoughts based on poking through the githubs and what I know of software development.
Activitypub was able to slowly grow and improve. It continues to slowly grow and improve.
Atproto? There's some cool other apps, sure, but it had to deal with too many users too soon. The foundation it turns out was plywood rather than stone or concrete..
"build fast and break things" tends to mean ignoring the people who have to clean up your mess of shards and strewn items.
It means an unstable foundation, that is difficult to keep strong.
Bearing in mind though, that activitypub had a smaller team at least to start though, meanwhile atproto *started* with dorsey money.
Yet that money didn't help prevent twice the number of issues that activitypub does, nor did it help with making good documentation.
Now, is it possible five years ago activitypub was in a similar space that atproto is today?
Potentially. The github doesn't show issues from 2019 to 2024. The 2015-2018 issues make sense for a new release.
Pull requests are rarely approved and there's different channels for going through that process, but that's fine. Because the issues? Are mainly regarding code maintenance or just...questions about how some things worse. No Day 1 bugs.
Now, atproto is not the same as bluesky, to be clear. But these are issues that should have either been covered in the design phase, or within the first couple years of launch.
Meanwhile? Activitypub is so much cleaner.
I'm also not impressed with webp format being an in progress thing three years post invites no longer being required.
I am extremely not impressed with 2FA still being an issue three years pot invites no longer required for bluesky.
So when I look at Atproto and see a pull request initiated a week ago adding a purge event for sensitive data that should have already had an auto purge system in place, in order to comply with gdpr guidelines of which there is PLENTY of documentation for?
I am not impressed.
And look. Activitypub has about 5 years on Atproto. But Activity pub *having* that five years means there's issues that have been solved already. There's also, y'know, structures in place and have existed for open source software, and various ways of going about things.
Fortunately while specific syntax is something I have to learn, I do *generally* understand the logic, and limitations, of what I'm looking at.
But even before I get to looking at the specific codebased, well, I looked at pull requests and issues.
Afterall, both of these are an open project meaning the code is available for everyone to see. And since both are trying to do similar things, I can even compare a bit.
And if I'm going to be complaining about code, I'd better actually look at the code I'm complaining about.
Ah the joys of THINKING my fibromyalgia pain was down to "i can pretend it doesn't exist" only to stand up and nope. Nope. The pain very much exists.
So I guess more poking at programming stuff. Did some poking at the githubs for atproto and activitypub last night.
tbh the gender stuff was easier because I was just, "Hey brain, most cis people don't dream of a closet that's partially femme clothes, and partially masc clothes altered to fit nicely when wearing a binder."
At least gender stuff doesn't complain about not having the right daemon.
I'm not saying the reason I picked MX Linux was ENTIRELY because I get to be "Heh, genderqueer title thingy Linux", but it wasn't not a factor.
It being a close collab with antifascist Linux well, that was also a significant factor.
Jay Graber stepping down into a more behind the scenes role, involving more making things seems like it'll be a better fit for her.
But Schneider is not going to stop the Claude usage nor is he someone folks should trust.
Additional important info is his "experience" with open platforms is...Wordpress.
A site that USED to be good, but holy shit is it difficult to do anything without paying a scammy extension. Including the Auttomatic company's OWN extensions!
So...Surface level looking into him, he runs a venture company with fellowships to get you "AI native skills". He knows not to talk about AI much on his wordpress blog, and to mention his non-AI investments, but goes in on the grift with the venture capital company.
Still waiting for people to make the connection that all the celebrities passing away from heart related conditions at "young for wealthy people" ages miiiiiiiiight have some correlation with the virus that massively effects the cardiac system.
Me when there's an explosion of neurological disorders in the next decade or so and everyone told us COVID was no big deal.
Shoutout to the homie @fdsignifier.bsky.social for putting this out and pointing people to advocates!

Every single video she makes about lead on this popular brand of “premium” glass baby bottle gets swarmed with paid bots (from the company) commenting “it’s not a big deal”…
dead internet theory but for lead poisoning is not something I had on my 2026 bingo card

This could have ridiculously far-reaching effects.
A dear person was just prescribed an anti-depressant because of its appetite-inducing side effect. I've been prescribed anti-anxiety meds for chemo-induced nausea relief.
Off-label uses can be the best uses of certain drugs in certain situations.
"Off-label" does not mean the FDA has not approved the medication; it simply means it has not approved the medication *for that purpose,* and pediatric prescriptions are so frequently off-label because it's extraordinarily difficult to do ethical research with children.
reminder: for covid, you won't show pos for 36-48hrs after exposure.
if your flight's friday morning, testing = inaccurate anytime before saturday night (unless you're feeling sick sooner)
also why it's responsible to stay at home for a few days after events so tests+no symptoms can be verified.
...That is definitely a "Preferably get her parents or someone from her sphere to help, your parents if need be, but not because I'm on your side. Rather, you should not be allowed anywhere near a newborn and you BETTER pay child support in a divorce you BETTER not be a dick about."
