I did a study on them a few years ago but found their work so stylised, I couldn’t find a way to adapt any of it into my own work without like… completely emulating his whole style

The problem with Game Gear modding is you’re more than likely going to need to replace all of the capacitors also, if they haven’t already damaged the board
If you don’t want to use a phone I recommend emulator handhelds like anbernic, they’re super cheap and pretty good these days, lots of options

I’d say that your sketches build significantly upon the reference that the 3D models provide, and that requires a level of understanding of anatomy to pull off
That said, you shouldn’t feel bad for using references if they help you to create better work
