More TB in the US likely reflects post-COVID failures in public health infrastructure abroad (which will likely be exacerbated by the US decreasing aid to international doctors and monitoring programs).
@thepwlab
Our labs study innate immune regulation during bacterial infection. We focus on interplay between mitochondria and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Robbie Watson) and post-transcriptional control of macrophage activation (Kristin Patrick). Views are our own.

To be fair, this one isnβt really RFKβs fault. This isnβt a vaccine failureβ we donβt vaccinate against TB in the US bc the vaccine isnβt very good and it makes monitoring exposure more expensive (blood test vs. PPD).
Yay! Congrats! Itβs about time! π
New year, new merch
Yea I went back in in December. I didnβt realize the timing would be so off in the summer. We wonβt even have scores before June?!? How is this slower than the NIH?
Yep! So considerate of them to tell us bad news twice. Just in case it was unclear.
This timing of this post seems to coincide with my own "Contingent Application status" email from the ACS, so I share an "ugh" in solidarity with you.
By βheartfelt letter,β do you mean βSummary Statement?β
Hey all, I reached out to the PO of my NIGMS MIRA to ask if the gov't shut down, and rescheduling of study sections, might allow for some accommodation to the standard rule that PIs cannot resubmit a MIRA while their MIRA (or other RPG) is under review (waiting in scores or summary statements) π§ͺ
Thanks for your response, Mary! It seems like theoretically, everything is back to normal with NCEs, but no one has changed the guidance on whether PIs should be planning for them or not. I'm glad to hear yours went through! Hope you enjoy the holidays with your little one!
Does anyone know if no-cost extensions at NIH are still at thing?
Has anyone gotten one?
Any insights at all apart from "don't count on it?" (which is the advice we get from our grants managers...)
Congrats Matt, beautiful work. Esp. fond of the non-Biorender graphical abstract. π
Aw thanks, labbies! Yβall are the best!
I'm talking about the toasted mediocre bagel-imposter, obviously, not your lovely child.
This is an assault on my eyeballs.
Anyone want to join me sobbing in my office?

The more we do it, the closer we are to making it stop. This is the way.
My fantastic department at CU Boulder is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor! This is a broad search spanning nearly all areas of biology. Applications are due Nov 13, 2025. Feel free to reach out to me with questions, and please share widely.

Right?!?! SO RUDE! We'll have to spell out "GO DORES" with our pipettes or something in response.
The person packing our VWR order chose violence today. #secfootball #anchordown

Dear #microbiology and #immunology community- I took a break from social media after I deleted my Twitter account, but am back here. Please help me rebuild my community by following me and amplifying this message- I will follow you back. Thank you and I look forward to our many interactions!
If you are somehow still compelled to be a PI in the world in which we find ourselves, we'd love to have you as a colleague!
Two positions in Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University.

Anyone know if IAR shuts down if the government shuts down?
Study Section peeps might want to download the grants they have to review...
According to news reports, NIH is on track to award nearly all of its FY25 budget. Program officersβworking long hours despite staff lossesβmade it possible. Take a moment to thank your PO for their dedication.
Deadly pathogens have never been cuter!
A huge shoutout to all the dedicated grants management specialists at the NIH who are working around the clock to push grants out before the Sep 30 deadline. And also to the POs responding to frantic emails.
Not an easy job under the best of circumstances and right now it's the pits.
Thank you!
Not necessarily a substitute, but I really enjoyed the pumpkin munchkins we got for lab meeting last week.
