GLP-1 drugs may fight addiction across every major substance, according to a study of 600,000 people GLP-1 drugs are the first medication to show promise for treating addiction to a wide range of substances.

For your weekend reading: I wrote about what our BMJ findings mean for addiction β€” why GLP-1s work across every addictive substance, and how these drugs seem to quiet cravings the same way they quiet food noise.

1/ The FDA just changed course and will now review Moderna’s new flu vaccine after previously refusing.

Public pressure was a factor here. Scientists, clinicians, reporters, and many others raised concerns, asked hard questions, and pushed for transparency.

The political effects of X's feed algorithm

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right.

Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.

This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.

Early prenatal care, considered best for moms and babies, is on the decline in the US Early prenatal care improves the chances of having a healthy pregnancy and baby. But a new federal report shows it’s been on the decline.

I literally wasn’t seen until the second trimester because there were no appointments available. Ultrasounds had to be done at 9:30 p.m. One of two hospitals in Greeley closed the maternity center. Greeley is not a small town or particularly rural at this point πŸ™ƒ

Independent rural hospitals are increasingly joining networks that share resources and bargaining power. The goal is to save money and improve patient care without losing their independence by joining a large health system.

Are Colorado leaves already changing? We separate fact from fiction. When Dan West heard on the radio last week that the fall foliage color change had started already in Summit County, he reacted with skepticism and a bit of annoyance.

No, the leaves aren't changing early in Colorado's high country. They're not getting enough water and are dying around the edges from drought.

Reevaluating the role of education on cognitive decline and brain aging in longitudinal cohorts across 33 Western countries - Nature Medicine In a large cross-national study, education was linked to better memory and larger brain volumes but not to slower cognitive or brain decline with age, suggesting that the association reflects early-life factors rather than neuroprotective effects in aging.

Education boosts memory and brain volume in aging but doesn't shield against cognitive decline, suggesting early-life factors are key.
