The head of a goddess decorates the flat surface of this hollow gold scarab set in a silver swivel ring. Carved in relief rather than engraved as on a stone scarab, the goddess wears a stephane or crown decorated with three palmettes and a necklace with acorn-shaped pendants. Her locks of wavy hair radiate out from her face and she has a fierce expression. She represents Hera Lakinia, a local version of Hera, whose sanctuary was near the city of Kroton in South Italy. Coins of Kroton from the 300s BCE show similar images of Hera Lakinia, supporting this identification. Getty Villa Museum (85.AM.273)
You'd be forgiven if you thought that this figure on the bottom of a scarab ring was Medusa. In fact, it's Hera - Hera Lakinia, recognizable due to her image on the coins of the ancient Greek city of Kroton (Crotone) on the lonian coast of Italy. 🏺 1/

The Pyramid of Cestius is an ancient pyramid in #Rome, #Italy, near the Porta San Paolo. It was built as a tomb for Gaius Cestius during the reign of the emperor Augustus, probably between 18 and 12 BC. It is made from Carrara marble.

Found in Anatolia a Hittite text date circa 2000 BC.

A gold band alabastron, with irregular bands of colored glass (cobalt blue, green, white, and black) snaking across the surface of this elegant vessel. The opulent gold bands are in fact gold leaf sandwiched between layers of colorless glass. Gold band glass was a luxury ware and this alabastron, or perfume flask, would have been owned by a prosperous Roman woman. The term alabastron comes from alabaster, the material from which containers of this shape, used for perfume and scented oil, were originally made in Egypt. In the Roman Empire, the use of gold band glass was initially limited to the creation of alabastra, but the medium was gradually adapted for the creation of a variety of other shapes.
Honestly, I can never get enough of ancient glass. The vibrant colors, clever forms, and even the use of gold. This alabastron (perfume or scented oil flask) has swirls of gold between bands of colored glass. 1/ 🏺

'Dance like no one is watching' ... Frozen while in motion, this statuette depicts a dancing woman, draped in a himation and wearing an ivy leaf wreath on her head. Her himation-wrapped right arm is folded back, her hand at her neck, her head lifted in abandon, and her right foot lifted backwards. Is it a religious dance, Dionysian, or instead linked to funerary practices? Perhaps all three. This figurine was certainly placed in a grave with the deceased person, likely a young woman. It still has traces of its original polychromy - particularly a bright pink pigment, which once covered the entire himation (cloak). Greek, Hellenistic, South Italian, Tarentine (the Greek city-state of Taras, part of Magna Graecia, or 'Great Greece', one of the Greek colonies in Italy), ca. 3rd century BCE. 6 × 2 7/16 × 3 3/8 in. Frozen in mid-step, this little Tarantine terracotta dancer’s himation (with traces of bright pink pigment) swirls about her feet. She wears an ivy leaf wreath on her head, connecting her to the worship of Dionysus. Almost certainly placed in a tomb. 🏺

This #FrescoFriday we’re in awe of the deep blue of this fresco from Pompeii. It depicts Mars, the god of war. He stands on a plinth adding a sculptural feel and is surrounded by bushes, trees, birds, and a rich blue sky that might be about to turn from twilight to night.

An oil painting of the Annunciation. Mary, in a tannish robe and blue cloak, turns away from the table where she kneels reading to look up at the Angel Gabriel. The winged angel, who has long brown hair and wears a red robe with a yellow-gold cloak, holds a stalk of lily in his left hand. With his right hand he points skyward. Between them, above their heads, in an opening in the clouds, is the Holy Spirit in the form of a white dove.
