looking down upon the top of a raceme of pale purple flowers with four petals arranged in cross. the top three flowers are fresh, while those behind / below are wilted; the two nearest flowers are paler than the third. in the center of each flower there is a light green style with a pale yellowish-green stigma, surrounded by six stamens with light green filaments and pale yellow-gray anthers.

a cutleaf toothwort seen from the side. its stem appears frosty on account of its coat of fine hairs. halfway up the step there is a whorl of three green leaves split into 3 very deep, thin lobes with sharp teeth. at the top of the stem there is a short raceme of flowerbuds, encased in green sepals with a glimpse of light purple petals curled up within. a little brown ant is climbing on top of the flowerbuds. at the base of the raceme there is a single blooming flower, facing to the right, seen from the side. its petals are blanched white, its pale yellow anthers visible between two petals. narrow, pointed, light green sepals alternate with the white petals. the flower stands above a bed of brown fallen tree leaves.

a clump of well-developed cutleaf toothworts growing up from a forest floor of fallen tree leaves and sticks. flowering stems are in full bloom, with many 4-petaled light purple flowers on top and whorls of 3 leaves with narrow, deep, sharply toothed lobes halfway up the stem. there are also many shorter leaf stalks growing around the flowering stems, with leaves resembling those found on the flowering stems but without an ascending stem above the leaves.
