BREAKING: The controversial hepatitis B vaccine trial in Guinea-Bissau has been *cancelled,* I can now report. A senior official with Africa CDC confirmed the cancellation and said GB officials are working to make sure any research is conducted ethically:
www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
The full protocol of the study in Guinea Bissau provides no reassurance. If anything is spells out just how insanely unethical the planned study is. The PI who wrote the protocol tried to defend the indefensible by writing to me directly. I responded publicly.

The leaked protocol of the CDC-funded Hepatitis B vaccine trial in Guinea-Bissau. “This is another Tuskegee.”
It is worse because it is clear upfront that this is unethical and poorly designed.

Unlawful grant terminations are harming young scientists and threatening innovation. ASCB joins leaders calling for immediate funding restoration.

🚨UPDATE: Rümeysa Öztürk has now suffered three separate asthma attacks while in DHS custody.
She has not received her required asthma medications—a violation of her fundamental right to medical care.
This is cruelty, it is neglect, and it is a damning moral and legal failure.
ASH decries HHS restructuring and CDC layoffs. The Blood Disorders Division addresses SCD, thrombosis, hemophilia, thalassemia, and more. Millions' health is at stake; ASH urges immediate action.

Today our nation's world leadership in science begins a slow death. We lose all the potential innovation, jobs, medicines, novel treatments, & science discoveries to save and improve lives. CDC & NIH will be a shell of themselves.
Will hurt for decades.

A sad day for science & public health www.cnn.com/2025/04/01/h...
Just in NIH grants, It looks like beautiful Iowa City, home of the U of Iowa, will lose $71m in funding. That's almost $1k per resident. And that's before all the other cuts to SSA, FDA, etc.
Anyone in Iowa City that can offer more insight?

Irresponsible public health leadership is dangerous and it kills.
The head of DHHS routinely tries to practice medicine without a license via podcasts and TV interviews and encouraged Vitamin A as treatment for measles. This is the direct result!

Sure looks like it'll be a 'study' with a predetermined outcome. If this were really an open question (it is not) it would make sense to contract with one of the numerous centers with extensive experience in vaccine trials. (1/2)
