Academia in a time of genocide: scholasticidal tendencies and continuities Basma Hajir &Mezna Qato Received 11 Sep 2024, Accepted 18 Dec 2024, Published online: 02 Jan 2025 Abstract This essay takes up Edward Said’s insistence on truth, justice, and tracing continuities of colonial violence to reflect on the university in a time of genocide. We set the stage with an outline of the university complicities; conditions continuous with, and connected to, the ongoing genocide in Gaza. We establish the legal resonance of ‘scholasticide’ and use the term as an explanatory tool to unpack four key ‘scholasticidal tendencies’ that extend to the USA, UK, and European academies: silence, the suppression of solidarity, ‘complex’ or ‘nuanced’ arguments, and the threat posed by certain theories. We critique these tendencies and highlight their deflections, obfuscations, contradictions, and moral failings. We gesture to possibilities beyond them and towards justice as an answer to the ‘question of Palestine’.

This morning’s raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital has put this last major health facility in North #Gaza out of service. Initial reports indicate that some key departments were severely burnt and destroyed during the raid. 60 health workers and 25 patients in critical condition, including those on ventilators, reportedly remain in the hospital. The patients in moderate to severe condition were forced to evacuate to the destroyed and non-functional Indonesian Hospital. @WHO is deeply concerned for their safety. This raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital comes after escalating restrictions on access for WHO and partners, and repeated attacks on or near the facility since early October. Such hostilities and the raids are undoing all our efforts and support to keep the facility minimal functional. The systematic dismantling of the health system in Gaza is a death sentence for tens of thousands of Palestinians in need of health care. This horror must end and health care must be protected. Ceasefire!

We will have to sanction Israel from the ground up, not the top down. Before the ruling class cuts ties, we will all have to cut ties: in our schools, our workplaces, our cultural institutions, our cities, our states. To do that we must systematically organize & build power locally.
Palestinians don’t need your sympathy or your pity or your symbolic gestures. We need you to cut ties with our killers and colonizers. We need you to boycott, divest from, and sanction Israel. Yes that includes academic institutions, whose commitment to genocide and apartheid is well documented.

I am afraid I must decline this review request based on the UKRI’s recent actions involving the ED&I advisory group after intervention from the UK Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology. The decision of the UKRI to suspend the ED&I advisoty group, and to entertain the Secretary of States’ accusations made against individual academics has serious implications for academic freedom in the UK and I cannot in all conscience agree to review for UKRI under such circumstances. To do so would be in my eyes complicity with a research culture that fails to uphold academic freedom and is happy to assist in authoritarian state interference into the personally held political views of colleagues. Please note that I will not agree to any UKRI review requests going forward until the ED&I advisory group is reinstated, the UKRI publically commits itself to upholding academic freedom, and personally apologises to those colleagues whose professional reputations it was complicit in
