Graphic showing the spring leaf index anomaly for March 3, 2026 for the contiguous United States, with spread arriving very early in central and western areas and late in the southeast.
It's been so warm for cities like Denver, Colorado that even phenological spring has arrived there according to the first leaf out! Wow!

Map showing whether the conditions associated with springtime biological activity are being reached early or late this year. Online at https://usanpn.org/files/npn/maps/six-leaf-index-anomaly.png
All that cold the L48 recently experienced really slowed down the onset of spring. But we are starting to see things pick back up, with extra-early activity in the TX panhandle and through parts of AZ, CA, and up the west coast

According to predictions from NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, Phil may be right for parts of the Northern Great Plains - more cool temperatures are on the way! Much of the SW and SE should see above-avg temps in coming weeks and the NW, MW, and NE should see avg temps.

Our maps of heat accumulation provide a more scientific look at how much heat has accumulated so far this year. Our maps show that heat accumulation is ahead of schedule in much of the west, on time in the Midwest and upper Northeast, and behind schedule in the East.

map showing early start to conditions associated with the start of biological activity in the spring in the Lower 48 states of the US
And we're off! Spring has started to arrive in the most southern states, and in parts of TX, LA, and MS, it's >two weeks earlier than "normal" (the last 3 full decades).
I feel like a broken record, we say this nearly every spring...

Status of Spring | USA National Phenology Network
Thanks for alerting us to this bug, @drrambio.bsky.social! The Observed Day of Onset is correct, but it shouldn't show as "144 days late." We'll fix that. The 9 days early is correct for the basemap, which is the Spring Index Leaf Anomaly. More info on the basemap at usanpn.org/data/maps/sp...
