A graphic features a flatlay comparison photo of machine component parts of various shapes and sizes on a cool grey woodgrain tabletop, a black line divides the graphic in half vertically: on the left, the title "Traditional" sits above the photo and the following specs are displated below the photo: "9 machined components, 4 lenses, 48 total components"; on the right, the title reads "openCPC" and below the specs read "1 machined component, 0 lenses, 17 components"
Reducing complexity β‘οΈ reduced cost β‘οΈ reduced price.
Optical counters are the heart of high-performing CPCs. By using the latest in manufacturing technology and some ingenuity to simplify and modernize our optical counter, resulting in a 10x reduction in associated manufacturing costs.
Hope everyone enjoyed their Halloween weekend! Here at the OpenAeros offices, everyday is spooky season. πΉππββοΈ
Interested in (a low-ish audio quality phone video of) the talk @masknerd.bsky.social gave this year at the @americanaerosol.bsky.social conference in Buffalo? Well you're in luck! Here's his presentation of low-cost instrumentation measuring UFPs in real-world urban and suburban settings.
If you're excited by this idea (or want to learn about the other two cohorts working with us on this!) be sure to check out the recording of our first live meeting: youtu.be/C0Q0ZH6e5AA?...
In our last installment of Meet Our Makers, Wyatt walks us through his plans to investigate a bifold mask adaptor using OpenRespirator manufacturing techniques:
π¦ΈHow does anti-mask bias influence character design? And how does character design influence public sentiment about masking? Jon Jon has thoughts:
Miss our first OpenRespirator Creative Cohort Live meeting? No worries, we've posted our discussion here! Get to know our cohorts, get read-in on their efforts and progress, and see some early designs. youtu.be/C0Q0ZH6e5AA
π¦ππ§ 'Tis the season... to discuss some of our favorite all-time makes. In the spirit of his OpenRespirator build, Wyatt (one of our ORCC creatives π») fills us in on a set of Halloween teeth he absolutely Had To Have and how he taught himself to design and produce his own in middle school.
Join us this afternoon at 3pm CST for our first OpenRespirator Creative Cohort Live Meeting! Get to know our cohorts, get read-in on their efforts and progress, and ask your questions. Tune in here: bit.ly/48jHI6J

This isn't Jon Jon's first creative respirator rodeo π π€
His personal, animation, and art background are filled with masked characters. Watch him walk us through that history here:

Say hi to Wyatt! Wyatt's background is chemical and academic. His making has largely centered around passion projects combining his expertise with practical needs and curiosities. Here, he shares some thoughtful reflection on what masking can mean:
Everybody say "Hi, Jon Jon!"!!
Jon Jon is an artist, animator, masker, and maker hailing from Toronto. Jon Jon has been executing his own PPE builds and mods for years, incorporating his hobbies and art with practical and health needs. Here, he talks about cosplay and masking and the exciting opportunities in their overlap:
IF you want to get realllllly nerdy on this, check out the full video documentation below or the full written documentation here: (4/4)

Here's Aaron and the project's chief engineer, Jon, explaining the prototyping method and why it matters: (2/4)
A black and white rasterized laptop and hand holding a pen are pictured. The pen is aimed at the screen of the laptop, which appears blue with a white graphic of a mask on it. The thumbnail of the hand is painted the same blue and squiggly action lines emanate from it. Down the center of the image, weaving in and out of those graphics, appear the words "follow along" in various shades of blue. Underneath, the url openaeros.com/openrespirator is visible. An openRespirator logo with the words "creative cohort" appear in the top right.
This year, weβve been working with a team of passionate, creative makers to put our open source respirator prototype manufacturing methods to the test. Weβre so excited to be introducing you to a couple of them this week. In the meantime, hereβs some background on what weβve been up to: (1/4)
Glad to bring the "little CPC that could" to the Healthy Indoor Air event at the UN today. The conversation in clean air are moving in the right directions.
Open source hardware will be part of the solutions and proud to show off the OpenCPC as part of tools that can help us measure it.
Panel 4 focused more on justice (generational, environmental, economic, and health) and policy in indoor air. Speakers included Violet Affleck, UN Environment Program Executive Director Inger Andersen, and several others.
Now, co-signers are adding their names to the pledge
Panel 3 ends with words from Plum Stone, CEO of Safer Air Project:
"If the act of breathing in a space makes someone sick, access isn't equitable"
"We all breathe the same air but not with the same consequences"
"unsafe air means unsafe spaces"
and finally:
"We have the tools"
As we move from Panel 2 to Panel 3, just want to recognize that we've missed lots of points and several speakers in this rundown. But you can watch along with us at the link above!
Jagat Narula, President of the World Heart Federation, says that air quality is "the least visible but moist consequential" determinant of health. Had some really fascinating insights about the way that indoor air has determined human health through history. Surprise sidequest to mummy forensics!
Now, Lidia Morawska, a leading aerosol scientist speaks: "clean air is not a privilege, but a right... a universal human right... as per the 2022 UNGA resolution." Announces that a regulatory path to clean air is on the cusp of being proven.
Now: the reps present from France and Montenegro officially become the first signatories on the Global Pledge for Healthy Indoor Air: the first ever to affirm that access to clean indoor air is a human right. Landmark moment!
That concludes Panel #1
He continues that poor indoor air quality "amplifies the suffering of millions... protecting indoor air is as urgent as ensuring clean water or safe food"
"let us leave this room not just with ideas, but with commitments! To protect every breath is to protect life!"
Jose Luis Castro, WHO Director-General Special Envoy for Chronic Respiratory Diseases speaks now.
"For too long indoor air has been the invisible crisis of our time"
