A warm welcome to our new postdoc, Arvin Fakhri.
Arvin will be exploring potential direct links between biodiversity and remotely sensed data across different scales, with the goal of producing a wall-to-wall biodiversity map of a demonstration area.
We are very happy to have him onboard!
Excited to start my postdoc at NMBU @uninmbu.bsky.social
I’ll be working on remote sensing and forest biodiversity in the BioDivAbove project: linking forest structure, deadwood, and fungi to big-picture ecosystem patterns.
But no matter where I go, a part of me will always stay with the FU Berlin crew.
Now, I’m starting a 3-year postdoc at @uninmbu.bsky.social, diving into the boreal forests, snow, spruce, and plenty of moss.
After completing my PhD, I returned to Berlin for new challenges: TreMs and deadwood detection. This period was not just about pixels and algorithms; it was also about late-night coding, field boots stuck in mud, and international dinners where food was as diverse as the datasets.
A turning point came when I joined @ffassnacht.bsky.social as my supervisor. Research became more than work-it became motivation. Soon after, I joined @fub-remotesensing.bsky.social, expanding my focus to German forests.
My PhD at K.N.T.U began in the Zagros forests of Kurdistan, where remote sensing was my tool, but the forest was my real classroom.
20 plots, hundreds of #Riegl TLS scans, thousands of berries… 🌲🫐 and a million laughs.
Norway field campaign = success! 💪
Now we are back in Berlin and ready to process our data.

Our team will collect terrestrial laser scanning data to on the connection between forest structure and biodiversity – we are looking forward to two weeks in the beautiful boreal forest north of Oslo.
And we are prepared for swampy conditions 😉
