Three women and one girl are featured in pictures that spell out IAA. There is an Interactive Arts Alberta logo followed by "Wishing everyone a happy International Women’s Day from Interactive Arts Alberta. Curious how we celebrate this day? First we start by celebrating it today on a day with a full 24 hours." it then instructs you to scroll for more.
Text slide "Interactive Arts Alberta is a non-profit with gender parity amongst our board and majority women and gender diverse volunteers. This is no coincidence. While women gamers make up 51% of the market, the games industry only has 25% of roles occupied by women and gender diverse individuals."
Another text slide with "Our approach? reject. the. status. quo. Representation in leadership and in the industry is important"
Text slide with "Interested in participating in systemic interruption? Connect with IAA and stay tuned for announcements in regards to our speaker line up for GDX 2026 and volunteer opportunities. We will never wait for the “right time” to have these conversations. There needs to be change in this industry and we will continue to advocate for marginalized genders and diverse individuals"
25%.
That’s the percentage of women and gender-diverse individuals in the global games industry. Just in the industry, not even in leadership.
That number isn’t just disappointing. It’s unacceptable.
Edmonton made playlist for "locked in during work time" will need to start with this song www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tkR...
International Women's Day (even when it is only 23 hours long) means a lot to our studio. We are constantly inspired by the women and gender-diverse individuals who make up the games industry that have carved a path for us to succeed where just a few years ago that would have seemed impossible.
No bowl cut and she'll be at GDC to chat? Sounds like someone people should connect with 🌟
Looking to get more involved with IAA? We're recruiting! Keep your eyes open for more posts, but for now we're looking for a volunteer Website Manager!

Oops all belly.
Did you know that Spry Fox has a presence in Alberta?
You can listen to the incredibly talented @pentapod.bsky.social talk about her early career here: www.podbean.com/media/share/... including her time on EverQuest II, working around the globe and ending up at BioWare before joining Spry Fox.
That's right! The legendary Roberta Taylor will be teaching through play March 9 at Walkthrough and all interested in board game design are welcome to attend. RSVP at the link below and make sure you're ready for an evening of fun!

Screaming this from the rooftops.
Behind (almost) every beloved auteur is a team of incredibly talented, often marginalised people who will be jettisoned into unprotected obscurity the minute their work draws even the lightest criticism towards the person taking all the credit 🤷
There’s a little girl at the pho place who is just rocking a pair of devil horns and I aspire to be more like her. She is free from all judgement. The most chaotic little sister energy possible.
Excited to present this to the community but FIRST we're looking to book some time with indies to discuss where we're at and the focuses that the community wants us to take moving forward as well. Strategic Plan 2027 doesn't exist without all of you incredible Albertan devs!
While the industry has changed significantly since this plan was developed, there's no shame in not hitting some of these targets--especially when they're based on community needs. There are a lot of check marks so far, and I couldn't have done it without our volunteers and our community.
We are currently in the midst of prep for Strategic Plan 2027-37 and reading some of the plans that people put out for their orgs that have such meaningless words in them seems a waste of everyone's time. We've got our 2017 plan and I plan to show everyone what we accomplished and what we didn't.
I am probably overthinking this, but I just want them to know I did it because they are genuinely innovative and it's an award for innovation. Times are strange.
I feel like my brain chemistry fundamentally changed when I realized that people pay for awards. Differentiating people who genuinely deserve recognition for themselves/their projects and people who just have money and connections is hard. I nominated a company for one and now it feels weird?
Happy New Year folks!
We are once again doing a no-crunch version of Global Game Jam at Walkthrough which means there is no overnighting at the space. Don't forget to check out the other options in Edmonton, Calgary, & Lethbridge!

Our holiday party and Game Awards watch party was a blast! We ended up with almost 50 devs and some fantastic convos about the games industry in Edmonton.
Thank you to MLA Nathan Ip for popping in to see what is cooking on Whyte Ave and welcome back to our neighbours @arcanautstudios.bsky.social!

Year of the fire horse is a pretty fun horse though!
Canada at it again with the women in the games.
Also we pay them, because art is work and original art is incredibly difficult to make!
I just want to hire the same artists over and over again (because they're all amazing) but it's been really fun having someone new each year do the Alberta Steam Sale graphics. The hunt for this year begins now! We've only ever used marginalized and Alberta-based artists, so many talented folks.
I know @henryfaber.bsky.social used to do a lot of this in-person work in Toronto, maybe he's got some ideas through the @gammaspace.bsky.social or @babyghosts.fund community?
