The Educational Choice for Children Act opens the door to waste, fraud, and abuse
Jon Valant examines how the proposed federal tax-credit scholarship program can be plagued by fraud and discriminatory practices.
“This bill would introduce the most significant & costliest new federal ed program in decades. It has virtually no quality-control measures, transparency provisions, protections against discrimination, or evidence to suggest that it’s likely to improve ed outcomes.”

In later years, my dad refused to be the sponsor for this competition, saying it gave kids the wrong idea. Instead, he came in and gave a lecture about buying and holding a well-diversified portfolio and not trying to time the market. Not such a fun game but solid lesson.

All this talk of Black Monday reminds me how in middle school, my group won the stock-picking contest by being disorganized and getting a late start. All you have to do is stay in cash until the market crashes -- good lesson! ;-)

I recently found a gift card that I won for doing some HR thing in my mail box, but the place has gone out of business. You never know.

I was incredibly honored to be awarded the CSWEP Carolyn Shaw Bell Award. When I accepted the award, I talked about the importance of mentoring.
The lessons I pass on are kind of obvious. But they are important, so I am going to share them yet again. (A🧵)

On a different topic. Is the APPAM portal the actual worst portal? I know there is a lot of competition, but I think it might be. (Looking forward to the conference ofc)

I think the California Earthquake Authority has a structure like that. But mortgage lenders don't require earthquake insurance, so I am not sure why people wouldn't exit the market.

I have been mentoring a refugee family from Afghanistan for about 5 months. I have learned a lot about myself, administrative burden, the immigrant experience, and America. As an "education person", seeing American school communications thru their eyes is wild.

Before scanning whole thing.
I'd be very curious what would happen if you uploaded this to claude.ai and asked for structured data.
In my experience, there is a lot of cleanup after abbyy and the like, but it's been a while and may have improved.

Book scanner is great but that has clearly typed text that is not close to the spine so a flatbed probably fine. Sometimes the default settings are unnecessarily low res or produce weirdly large file sizes. Do a sample of a couple pages all the way through to make sure the settings are ok...

Who uses legacy admissions? | Brookings
Most research and discussion about legacy admissions focuses on highly selective private colleges, but how widespread is the practice of giving special consideration to relatives of alumni in admissio...
Check out my latest on legacy admissions.
A lot of colleges, including many publics, do it.
Also surprised to learn many public flagships offer scholarships to legacies.
They should stop, but getting rid of these practices probably won't have huge effects on access or diversity.
