That sucks, but if they didn't completely root them out some of them might grow back (depending on how big they were already).

I'll trade your crabgrass for my annual bluegrass. That stuff is the devil.

A Large Milkweed Bug, I believe.
Four pictures of seedlings taken through the top of plastic 2-liter soda bottles. Green Milkweed, Asclepias viridis. Three medium-sized seedlings with round, sort of thick spring-green leaves.
Fuzzy Phacelia, Phacelia hirsuta, four? seedlings with tiny round blue-green cotyledon leaves.
Standing Cypress, Ipomopsis rubra has long skinny cotyledons and one plant has true leaves that are forked like little tridents.
White Vervain, Vervena urticifolia. Little triangular leaves, looks just like Mountain mint to me. These seeds were from a volunteer in my garden. The dog stepped on this container and smashed the top in, so it's crooked. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a, March 7 2026.
Hey gardeners, I hope everyone made it through last night's tornados without damage. Some of my winter sown seedlings: Green Milkweed, Fuzzy Phacelia, Standing Cypress and White Vervain. #nativeplants #wintersowing ๐ฑ #gardening
I could never get them to germinate either, but then a volunteer moved in and now I have them forever. (Not sorry.)
That's funny, my husband got a bad case of West Nile several years ago, long before I started growing native plants, after getting a bunch of mosquito bites while mowing the lawn.
A monarch butterfly hovers above a bright yellow flower. The background is green and blurred.
The Center and allies just sued the Trump adminโs #EPA for reapproving a weedkiller called #dicamba.
It kills #NativePlants and threatens dozens of imperiled species โ including monarch butterflies, since it harms milkweed, the only plant the caterpillars eat ๐ฆ๐ฆ

Three Spring Beauties. They are tiny white flowers with five petals and stamens with pink pollen. New flowers like the one on top have delicate deep-pink stripes on the petals and older flowers fade to white.
A line of four typical Spring Beauty flowers plus one with a double flower with extra petals on the right.
More Spring Beauties with white petals so you can really see the pink pollen. Claytonia virginica is native to the eastern and central US, where it grows in meadows and lawns. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.

Wouldn't this conflict with federal laws against killing migratory birds?
Last year, I actually saw a tiger swallowtail in February, but I don't know if it found anything to eat. We're back to cold for the next few days as well.
A yellow butterfly is feeding on henbit (Lamium amplexicaule). His wings are partly folded and sticking out of the vegetation so you can't see his head. You can tell he is male because the black borders of his wings are solid instead of lacy. Henbit is a common garden weed that is native to Europe and Asia. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.
Good morning! I saw the first butterfly of 2026 yesterday, making like a lawn dart. Orange Sulphur, Colias eurytheme. #butterflies #insects #gardening ๐ฑ
The older plants that have flowered already are much more petite.
A large yellow swallowtail butterfly with black tiger stripes and a small bee with long antennae share a thistle flower. Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, Papilio glaucus. I think the bee is Thistle Longhorn Bee, Melissodes desponsus, but I am not great at bee ID. Tall Thistle, Cirsium altissimum. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.
Butterfly, bee and thistle. #fallbackflowers #fallback to August 19. Species in alt text. #nativeplants #butterflies #bees
Callirhoe Bushii/Bush's Poppy Mallow has rounded palmate leaves that already have a few little insect holes in them.
This is Drummond's Aster/Symphyotrichum drummondii. Emerald-green heart shaped leaves that are slightly toothed on the edges. I haven't cut back last years stems and leaves yet, which are dry and orangey brown.
A rosette of Gaillarida Suavis/Perfumeballs looks like a lot like a fancy red lettuce with lots of narrow toothed leaves tinged in purple. The smaller rosettes around it are Astranthium ciliatum/Western Daisy.
Three rosettes of Murray's Scarlet Beardtongue/Penstemon murrayanus, planted too close together (my bad). They are mounded rosettes of abundant blue-green, ruffly leaves with a waxy texture. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a
Some of the native plants in the garden that were hidden under snow a few weeks ago. I've been surprised by how many of them grow all winter. #nativeplants #gardening ๐ฑ

A tiny bright pink moth rests in a purple Mealycup Sage flower. Pyrausta inornatalis.

My native plant garden has really become a fun habitat to observe and photograph in recent years. So much life shows up to take advantage of it, and I hope this slideshow I've created really showcases that.

A disheveled daisy that looks like it would rather just go back to bed. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.
My first flower of 2026 is in a very Monday morning mood. Astranthium ciliatum, Western Daisy. #nativeplants #gardening ๐ฑ
A very tiny sweat bee, black with yellow rear legs, feeds on a bright yellow helenium flower.
A Furrow Bee lands on the flower right next to the sweat bee and literally kicks it off. The furrow bee's rear leg is thrust out sideways to kick the tiny sweat bee, which is rolling sideways off the flower.
The Furrow Bee is alone on top of the flower. Probably Halictus ligatus, Striped Furrow Bee. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a, August 2025.
There's not room on this flower for the both of us. #fallback to August 5. Two bees on Helenium amarum, Bitter Sneezeweed. #bees #nativeplants
In a garden where you see the same (large) bugs every day, you start to see them as individuals with distinct habits and "personalities", even within the same species. And they also seem to recognize you over time.

A green leaf, fuzzy and deeply dissected into lots of pointed edges, sits in a melted hollow in the snow that is shaped like a more simple leaf. Glandularia bipinnatifida, aka Dakota Mock Vervain.. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.
Prairie verbena in the garden today, patiently waiting for spring. Glandularia bipinnatifida. #nativeplants #gardening ๐ฑ
I would choose something less aggressive because it needs such heavy pruning. It once grew into the attic of our garage and it goes under the driveway to the lawn. (It was already here in the ground apparently and came up when we moved in and put up a fence.)
A single cluster of dangling orange Trumpet flowers holds a sleeping bumblebee with wide yellow stripes across his abdomen. He is sleeping on his back inside the trumpet-shaped flower with his legs sticking up and resting on the outside of the petals. The background is blurry emerald-green foliage. Bombus pensylvanicus and Campsis radicans. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.
American Bumblebee in the Trumpet Vines. #Fallbackflowers #fallback to July 30, 2024. Try to be the bee, if only for a moment. #bees #nativeplants
A large carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica) has just finished feeding on a Maypops flower and is about to fly away with a thick crust of yellow pollen on its shoulders. The flower is lavender with two layers of petals, one layer of ordinary petals and a top layer of long skinny tendrils with squiggly ends. A weird-looking tall pollen structure comes from the center. Passiflora incarnata. Oklahoma Northern Crosstimbers ecoregion 29a.
An Eastern Carpenter Bee in the Maypops. Xylocopa virginiana and Passiflora incarnata. #Fallbackflowers #fallback to July 26. #nativeplants #bees
