everybody know the chords to When The Saints Go Marching In
Houston’s gambit today was returning a calculated bit of the funding to try to silence most of the uproar, and I am reluctant to celebrate
Has there been some good news re arts and culture funding that I missed?
may god have mercy on us
Amazing
It’s going to be ok.
This feels like classic psychological abuse
I am going to take away what you need
and then give it back so you feel indebted to me
Could be worse, could be Parks Canada camping site signup day
Canadian cities, always: just put the new rink on the edge of town
Also Canadian cities: it would be great to put a subdivision next to the new rink, maybe a school or two
Also Canadian cities: and a Walmart and a Costco
Also Canadian cities: gee road maintenance is expensive all of a sudden

Don’t stop. Cuts to arts and heritage have not been reversed. This has brought welcome scrutiny that has shown which special interests this government really serves. They have deliberately mismanaged their way into this crisis.
My favorite part of Houston's announcement was when he said resource extraction companies are going to come here, set up shop & spend money (before they destroy our environment & hide in tax havens). While ignoring that people who already live, work & spend money here are losing their livelihood.

Government on the run
it's not even the 'business case' of it all, it's the utterly patriarchal and predatory insistence that imperfect victims can be disregarded.
you should be begging, not yelling, and you should show me some goddam respect while I pick your pocket and i can't deal with you when you're hysterical.
Not to mention that the people in the tourism, arts and culture sector don't destroy nature, won't offload their clean up costs onto the public and will always be here driving economic gains for people who are actually doing something worthwhile instead of polluting the earth.
Imagine blaming arts funding for the deficit not the removal of the bridge tolls.
And it doesn’t have the same appeal to Houston’s rural base. Presumably his (elderly?) voters think young Nova Scotians should have to go get trapped in mines the way people did when they were kids.
The story leaves this kind of important detail out: bsky.app/profile/mich...
And he does this during a time when everyone is cancelling US travel and seeking destinations elsewhere. He needs to go NOW. If he can’t acknowledge growth opportunities in tourism at this moment in history- it’s clear that he’s been bought out by petrocapitalists.
The premier of Nova Scotia’s ENTIRE plan is based on oil and gas extraction. He just said it on air. That is his only plan. Our biggest industry is tourism and he just cut $$ to tourism, arts & conservation (all reasons why people come here).
“Business cases” 🤬 A 👏 GOVERNMENT👏 IS 👏 NOT 👏 A 👏 BUSINESS 👏
We give taxes to governments so they can do what businesses can’t. Provide vital services to everyone, not just those who can pay. Teach kids our history and traditions. Give dignity to seniors. Make this a safe and decent place to live.
The less Nova Scotians know about their past & feel connected to place, the easier it is for a government to redefine conservation areas & penalize people for not aligning use of land with exploitation.
History is dangerous, writers in schools are dangerous, artistic critique of power is dangerous.
