Women moved across continents and oceans, survived childbirth, managed households, achieved huge accomplishments, and the records are like: Mrs. John Smith. #Genealogy #FamilyHistory

He was mine for house history, too. Did we have that module together maybe? His session on the Lost Child made me wish we’d had in-person lectures.

A couple of the best classes I attended were recorded and will be available for free on the RootsTech website. I highly recommend Church Records by Morag Peers and The Lost Child by Nick Barratt. I'm also looking forward to catching up on many classes that were recorded that I didn't attend.

RootsTech was excellent this year, the first time I've been in person since 2016. Attended some terrific classes, reconnected with folks from @strathgenealogy.bsky.social & last year's Ken Your Kin, met one of my tutors from @dundee.ac.uk's MLitt program, and made new connections. So much fun!

Excellent thread. Women’s work through history often went unrecorded because it wasn’t out-of-the-house employment. Women did all the labour of having boarders, took in sewing, sold eggs, or did any number of other things that contributed directly and was essential to family finances.

In the Gairloch museum, there’s a map on the wall from the 1840s showing the then new crofts at Londubh and who was getting them, including my 3x great grandfather Donald MacKenzie and all his neighbours. I was thrilled to stumble across it. Always check local museums!

One (three!) of my all-time favourite small-world experiences: THREE times my dear friend Susanna Kearsley and I, who live across Canada from each other, have coincidentally been in Edinburgh at the same time & have spent great days researching together. Kindred spirits make research even more fun.

Love using maps for genealogy. They're such a great tool for understanding the physical world in which our ancestors lived and providing context. I can lose hours - days! - playing on the NLS maps site. maps.nls.uk

A yellow building off a narrow alley, nearly hidden behind a large tree.

The unassuming building hiding behind that tree is the fascinating Edinburgh Museum Collection Centre, where they keep stuff not currently on display in Edinburgh museums, including the Museum of Childhood, the People's Story Museum, and more. Well worth a visit. cultureedinburgh.com/our-venues/m...

Niche research question: does anyone have access to a Plan Popp for Brussels? In the 1820 Almanac my character lives at place Royale, n. 949, and I need to know exactly where that is. Plans Popp at kbr.be don't cover that area. A possible query for @vincenzodm.bsky.social or @svanimpe.bsky.social ?

Counting the days until I'm back in Edinburgh again in June. This is one of my favourite views in the city, overlooking Princes Street Gardens with the castle in the distance.

a brown wire-haired pup stands on a wooden deck in a grassy yard. he looks at us with golden eyes and his right ear flipped inside out. he has a pipe-shaped stick in his mouth, giving him the appearance of a sophisticated and dapper gentleman. just give him a deerstalker cap and a cloak, and he'd give Sherlock Holmes a run for his money.

This pup found a stick shaped like an old timey pipe earlier today and has already solved three mysteries. 13/10

I've been following the updates of a lost dog for the last 5 days in and around Leith and lads, she's back with the owners. Facebook I Love Leith group has gone wild, everyone is so happy and it's also the wee dogs birthday 😭

Last year, I stayed near The Gently Mad bookshop and bookbinding services in Edinburgh, a gem with narrow aisles and hidden warrens full of beautiful old books, as well as a bookbinding workshop on the mezzanine. I could spend days doing nothing but visiting bookshops in Edinburgh and be happy.
