Full-time slugabed. He/Him. I write about games, anime, and other media. A lot of Bioware, flight combat sims, and agency in games chatter from me. Linktree: https://linktr.ee/WordsMaybe Avatar by @nutmargaret Banner by @owawa

I think it's cool and amusing that Marathon, a very mainstream AAA game in a style not typically concerned much with narrative, tells its story trough numerous visual novel-like moments. However, I think Bungie should take things a step further. Make them unskippable.
As a certified frog, and to a lesser degree, Bulbasuar enjoyer, the stubby little legs and everything about the neck and head structure are not giving frog.
That first game is rough. Retrying it now, but it is so much of the under appreciated little touches Bioware gets right, done wrong or not at all. On top of a colonialism narrative, that does try to be critical of such, but from what I've seen, utterly fails.
Gurren Lagann changed my life for the better.

Dragon Age II's 15th anniversary just passed. The broader discourse is still pretty hard on it, though folks like myself have learned to love it. Here's one of my favorite pieces of my own discussing how it, Citizen Sleeper, and The Wire handle their city based settings and the politics of them.
Baxter is correct. Watched it a couple years ago and loved it. I think there is, or at least was, a prevailing popular opinion that any live action Oshii, and all animated stuff post Jin-roh, is bad. Couldn't disagree more.
In case you haven't had a chance to listen to the latest ep, we have a patreon now! We're gonna be putting out our new hangout show The Bog Standard out over there along with some strange Blood/Milk video content? Look forward to OAM3 for more info on what that could mean www.patreon.com/BogFrogPod
Boku no Natsuyasumi 2 is the latest addition. Just kept thinking about it these last two years.
Said it before and I will say it again. Baxter is a good dude, a talented writer, and translator of many cool things. If you got some cash to spare to make a stressful time of their life a little less stressful, please do so.
I'm super curious how it'll play out in the full game. Having "end game" areas and implying player action can direct narrative to some degree is intriguing.
Wrapped up Life is Strange: Double Exposure yesterday and past episode 1 is pretty much all bad. To try and shift the genre of the series is one thing, but they do so in a way that feels so very forced. I've next to no interest in the new game this month.
I will do my best. Heck, I might even write something on it.
Put like 15 hours into the server test for Marathon. Despite having been mostly done with competitive online games I'm quite enjoying it. Helps that the story is told trough VN section where a bunch of weirdos keep belittling me and reminding me of my isolated existence in a corporate hellscape.
Recently started the first one. Turns out you were correct in saying its really dang good.
New translation!
This week Iβve translated the short documentary Ise-Shima, the 1949 directorial debut from the man behind Godzilla, Ishiro Honda!
Enjoy the start of one of the most famous names in movies, the first instance of underwater filming in Japan, and lots of post-war anxieties!
CD is 100 dollars or so short of sustainability. Incredibly valuable resource for anyone who cares about games, whether for research or just casual reading. Also like... look lmao, web's as fractured as it's ever been. Having the roundup gather a bunch of cool stuff you'd never see otherwise is good
Legit one of Oshii's nost interesting works. Also can't tell me Kojima didn't watch this while making Death Stranding.
Baxter...my hero.
was gonna do an essay next week, but I finished my subs so nuts to it
Next Friday...another short documentary translated! This time it'll be Ise-Shima, the directorial debut from Mr. Godzilla himself, Ishiro Honda!
Hoping to have this video out before the end of the month. It'll be more about documenting the end of Anthem trough my perspective and its community, and less about any claims as to why it failed.
New translation!
Iβm happy to release proper manmade subtitles for a gorgeous piece of scientific filmmaking by one of Japanβs great documentary directors, Sumiko Hanedaβ¦The Cabbage Butterfly!
Come to learn about butterflies, leave with daydreams of the world.
Give it a watch!
The last few graphs of this really hit me, specifically about things "regressing" from a moment where a certain type of games crit felt truly viable. It still exists, I still make my attempts at such, but given who are the most dominate voices in the broader discourse, well, it doesn't feel great.
Hey, my Ghost of Tsushima and Spec Ops: The Line piece got featured here!

And now you get to reward yourself by playing the Wii prequel game.
Sure, but why not one of the not young guys then? Or do they just prefer to keep a couple of those guys down there as stabilizing forces for the benefit of the Bumps and Bonks?
Genuine question here, but is there not someone they could call up who would be better than Hathaway or Deslauriers at this point? One of the prospects? Perhaps Pederson or Tony Dick? Is it just a roster spot or cap issue or something that I'm missing?
