Longitudinal and Combined Smartwatch and Ecological Momentary Assessment in Racially Diverse Older Adults: Feasibility, Adherence, and Acceptability Study Background: Due to the rising prevalence of Alzheimer disease and related dementias, easily deployable tools to quantify risk are needed. Smartphones and smartwatches enable unobtrusive and continuous...

Very excited to share my first paper on my smartwatch dissertation study! We found that 4 week smartwatch monitoring combined with daily EMA is highly feasible and acceptable in older adults. Avg smartwatch wear time was 21h/d and EMA adherence was 94%!

In contrast, greater IIV of sleep measured from a daily EMA question (i.e., how many hours did you sleep the night prior?) and a higher score on the PSQI sleep quality measure were related to worse executive function. We also went on a spooky lab ghost tour which was awesome! (3/3)

I found that greater intraindividual variability (IIV) of daily sleep measured from a smartwatch was related to worse memory. (2/3)

The War on Science (Feb 2025 teach-in draft) The War on Science What’s happening? What can we do about it? An interactive teach-in for biomedical researchers Please share, modify, and repurpose this template presentation (with credit). Good luck...

Made some slides for scientists to talk about what's been happening & what we should do next. There are probably many people better qualified than me to talk about these issues. If that's you, please, please, please consider holding some virtual advocacy training sessions for researchers this week.

In 2017, during his first administration, President Trump made a budget proposal that would have reduced the indirect cost rate for research institutions to an across-the-board, categorical rate of 10%. Congress unequivocally responded to ward off such a change to the calculation of indirect cost rates. In 2018, Congress enacted an appropriations rider prohibiting HHS or NIH from spending appropriated funds “to develop or implement a modified approach to” the reimbursement of “indirect costs” and “deviations from negotiated rates.” Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2018, Pub. L. No. 115-141, 132 Stat 348, § 226. That rider has remained
in effect through every appropriations law governing HHS to this day. See Further Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024, Pub. L. No. 118-47, § 224.

The complaint filed by 22 states attorneys general argues that the Trump administration's capping of NIH indirects at 15% is illegal.

In 2018, Congress acted specifically to prevent "deviations from negotiated rates" for indirects. This remains in effect to this day.
