It might be too late. It might take a revolution. It would be nice if the media would do better, and call out Trump's madness. Maybe they could stop taking his lies at face value, like when they credulously report he said Iran blew up the girls' school, not America.

Perhaps there are nuances that get lost in communication/interpretation. To me, the continual insistence that the USA has not become a fascist state, that the rule of law can still be depended on...perhaps I equate those positions with a failure to recognize or acknowledge danger/emergency.

No, I agree that whatever exists of the rule of law should be fully leveraged, to the extent that old rules and norms will prevail as their meant to; but I quibble with his attitude about whether those norms, or the rule of law itself, is in danger. I believe it may even be too late already.

People in MN have also been shot in the face in the street for no reason and...nothing. NOTHING. Any ICE guy up on charges? No? Huh. A handful of way-too-late habeas petitions in MN is not good enough to use as evidence of "the system may be slow, but it works." The system is fatally injured.

Aren't you worried that it may be too late? When you say "we need to take control again," why are you so confident the Republicans will allow that to happen? Peaceful transfers of power are part of that old system of norms that Tom is so sure of. Many of us are not.

It's kinda tough, because the system is rotting. Citizens United. Presidential Immunity. Untouchable, corrupt supreme court. No rights for citizens in the face of ICE gestapo tactics. Why isn't the system stopping those things? Why are Bolsanaro and Duck-soo in jail, but not Trump?

Of course not-the answer is much simpler: mainstream media must not normalize Trump's shockingly incandescent corruption and lawlessness. The vandalism of the infrastructure of the rule of law is frightening. What if ICE do end up intimidating people at polling stations? What if there's martial law?

That's not the point or the argument. The point is: Tom still thinks "norms" and "the levers of democracy" will save us. He thinks the people screaming their heads off that this is a five-alarm emergency are over-reacting. And those people get exasperated with his patronizing Rome-fiddling.
