Ed Pawson, member of the #RE Policy Unit, spoke at the Religious Media Centre's panel, discussing RE's role in boosting religious literacy, outlining how a #Religion & #Worldviews approach can address many of the division issues raised in the "Questions of Hope and Hate" report. ⬇️
The Curriculum and Assessment Review has recognised #RE’s essential role in preparing young people for life and work by backing its inclusion in the #NationalCurriculum.

#RE has faced decades of neglect, leading to an ongoing shortage of trained teachers and a postcode lottery of provision.
Including RE in the national curriculum is now an opportunity to end this.

We welcome the recommendation by the Curriculum and Assessment Review to include RE in the #NationalCurriculum.
We look forward to working with the Government and the RE community to shape the future of the subject.

On this morning’s BBC R4 Sunday Programme, a DfE spokesperson said that RE trainee numbers are up — true, due to the bursary they’ve now scrapped!
The rise proves incentives work.
Removing them will undo the recovery.

The government’s Curriculum and Assessment Review presents a perfect opportunity to address the problems of inconsistency in RE, argues @sarahfcg.bsky.social from Religious Education Council: buff.ly/O4kIfLG #curriculum #schools #education #teaching
Developing a national plan to address this is now a priority
- Restore Subject Knowledge Enhancement course funding
- Boost specialist recruitment
- Adopt the REC’s National Content Standard to secure high-quality RE.

RE is valued by employers and parents, yet there is a crisis of specialism in schools.
A quarter of a million students take a GCSE in RS.
Despite this, half of those delivering the lessons mainly teach another subject.
Discussing the big questions in life is a vital part of young people’s education.
#Worldviews #TeamRE
GCSE RS remains one of the most widely taken subjects at KS4.
249,422 students took a GCSE RS this year.
We urgently need more specialist RE teachers to ensure every child gets access to high-quality RE.

The number of students taking Religious Studies GCSE in England and Wales fell by 2.6 per cent this year — but it remains a popular subject that requires more specialist teachers, the Religious Education Council said on Thursday
RS A-level entries have dipped slightly (1.3%). With an ongoing shortage of subject specialists, @natre-update.bsky.social and the RE Council are warning that more and more young people who want to take the subject at A-Level are unable to.

A-level RS entries have held steady this year, with a lower decline than most other humanities.
RS allows young people to explore the religious and non-religious worldviews that continue to influence our society. #TeamRE #Worldviews #Religion #TheREPodcast
RE teachers are reporting an increased interest in life’s big questions among students. RS A level entries saw a smaller drop this year than other humanities, and it remains a popular choice. @churchtimes.bsky.social
