It's not about giving people something for nothing.

It's about giving people the power to define the value of their own labor by making sure their basic needs are always covered, and taking away the power of corporations to exploit good, hardworking people.

Conservatives want you to believe that Medicare for All and Universal Basic Income are policies that only benefit the least productive among us, but that's a lie--they benefit all workers. They're easily two of the most pro-worker policies a country can institute.

Similarly, workers in all industries would have a lot more options--and thus a lot more control over their own earning potential--if healthcare wasn't tied to employment.

Universal Basic Income would mean that corporations could never again use our basic needs as leverage against us. Workers would have more freedom to change employers, negotiate for better contracts, or take time off from working altogether if they needed to.

With respect to the WGA strike, specifically, Hollywood execs haven't been shy about the fact that they're waiting for folks to become desperate. They're willing to use the threat of the writers potentially losing their homes as leverage in their contract negotiations.

I can't help but look at all the labor strikes happening and think that negotiating workers would have a hell of a lot more leverage if this country had a Universal Basic Income and guaranteed healthcare.

Don't cross picket lines, and when you vote, make sure you're voting for someone who will put the needs of the American working class above the avarice of the corporate elite.
