Today co-founder Becky spoke to the UK Medical Schools Council Welfare Leads about our collaborative report with the @thebma @bma.students on sexism and sexual violence affecting medical students.
All medical students deserve to be safe at university and on placement.
Earlier this year, we surveyed medical students in collaboration with @survivinginscrubs.bsky.social to understand how sexism and sexual violence is impacting students.

-84% of respondents believed sexism to be a problem in medical education.
The data is deeply shocking:
- 41% of female respondents had been a target of sexual harassment or sexual assault whilst at university.
- 37 incidents of rape or assault by penetration, 85 cases of sexual assault, 43 cases of drinks spiking and 24 cases of stalking.
Today our report with @bma.students @bma.org.uk on sexism and sexual violence in medical schools has been published.
The course is 5 weeks long, free to access and hosted on @futurelearn.
Sign up to access the course via this link: www.leadershipacademy.nhs.uk/core-manager...
The course covers the fundamentals on sexual safety in healthcare, societal and historical contexts to gender discrimination, sexual safety through an intersection lens, domestic abuse affecting healthcare staff and how to change workplace culture to prevent sexual misconduct.
Since the start of this year we have been busy working with the team at @nhsenglandldn race strategy team to create a comprehensive e-learning course on sexual safety for healthcare professionals and managers in healthcare for the @nhsleadershipacademy
Today is #NSMD, a day organised by @doctorsindistress.bsky.social and NHS Practitioner Health to honour the health and care professionals weβve tragically lost. Together, we can help to make sure that no more lives are lost to suicide. #HopeThroughAction

After two successful courses earlier this year weβre excited to say we will be running them again this autumn!
Research published in the @the_bmj_ this week showed women doctors are consistently misidentified as nurses despite wearing the same uniform as men.
Are we surprised? No it happens all the time to us.
Has it happened to you? Comment below
Well last year was one of the biggest years in our campaign but weβre only starting to see policy, training and reporting processes being put into place by healthcare employers. Itβs still early days and there is a huge amount of work needed to undo decades of #sexism and #misogyny in healthcare.
But the results showed little change in the rates of sexual harassment and gender based discrimination.
Why?
The results are out from the latest @gmcuk trainee survey. Last year the survey asked about sexual harassment for the first time so we were interested to see if there had been any change this yearβ¦
While the tribunalβs decision ultimately supported the dismissal, describing unwanted physical conduct as βinnocuousβ is damaging to victims especially in the context of coercion, intimidation and bullying of resident doctors.
Transparency in cases of sexual misconduct is vital, not only helping the victim but also ensuring employers handle cases in the correct way and are accountable for their actions.
We deserve an NHS free from NDAs.
NDAs are used to prevent victims from talking about the harassment or assault they have experienced which creates a huge barrier to victims seeking support and justice. We know of cases where NDAs have been used in the NHS in cases of sexual misconduct and morally this is wrong.
Changes to the Workers Rights Bill are being made to prevent NDAs (non disclosure agreements) being used by employers to silence victims in cases of sexual misconduct at work! @theguardian.com
And what about all the changes we need to promote the equality of women in the NHS workplace:
sexism, fertility and maternity rights, and equal opportunities were not mentioned.
And we welcome @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social to get in touch with us to discuss these plans π
What are your thoughts?
And is this different to sexual safety measures put into place through the NHS England Sexual Safety Charter?
Or is this a duplicate exercise, will it be meaningful?
We welcome the (brief) mention of sexual harassment in the new 10 year health plan but have some questions:
Producing staff standards on tackling sexual violence... what does this actually mean?
Last week @thebma members voted in favour of a motion for the BMA to lobby for a national reporting system for sexual harassment, mandatory active bystander training, external investigators to assess cases of sexual misconduct and support victims as witnesses in tribunals.
And we fully agree!
Both spoke boldly about their personal experiences trying to raise concerns and the impact on them, raising important lessons for us all.
Shockingly only 8 of 36 medical schools in England have committed to take action against sexual violence by signing the @nhsengland Sexual Safety Charter.
We had a fantastic webinar last night with a brilliant talk by two of our med student volunteers, Maddie and Katie talking about fighting sexism and sexual violence in medical schools.
Our next course on Advanced Sexual Safety in Healthcare runs this Friday. We have a couple of last minute places so book asap if youβd like to learn all about sexual safety for managers, supervisors and leaders in healthcare. rtjisx-bq.myshopify.com/products/int...
