Even Death Won't Part Us Now
Tony and Maria's impossible vow, and the romance & risk of forever
In a dress shop, Tony & Maria make a solemn, impossible vow. They rewrite βtill death do us partβ β *even* death, they say, wonβt part them.
Their love is doomed, & their vow might seem youthfully hyperbolic. But it is sincere. And it is *brave.*

The Judge's "Johanna"
What Turpin's mea culpa reveals, and what disappears without it
Should Judge Turpinβs βJohannaβ ever be cut from SWEENEY TODD?
Our latest essay is a spirited argument for its inclusion. Itβs uncomfortable, yes. But it is *essential* if we are serious about understanding the moral architecture of the show.

βI am not hiding behind my canvas. I am living in it.β
The real Georges Seurat WAS living in his canvas, hidden from view for more than a century.
The vase of flowers below was once Seurat himself, at his easel. It would have been his only self-portrait. He painted over it.
