Working on some new short stories; need to get back to the novel/las but this is a nice break. :)
Cover art for LSQ Issue 61. A pink naked woman covered by blue hair at the fun parts looks like she's enjoying herself.
18. Listing my favorites from @lunastation.bsky.social Issue 61
"Roil" by @acluke.bsky.social
"The Ferryman Makes His Morning Crossing" by Corey Davis
"Sun Flowers" by @srich-writer.bsky.social
"A Flame at the Edge of Darkness" by Rebecca Washburn
Thank you! :)
Happy to say that my story "Things in Threes," published in @nightshadesmag.bsky.social, was selected for inclusion in the Best Microfiction 2026 collection. Very excited about this! I'll provide more info on availability of the collection once I have it. :)
You know what? I encourage you to write today.

Got a manuscript out the door to its last-chance micropress today; going to self-pub if it doesn't make it there. It's nice to have a plan.
Photograph of Nichole L. Lightner snuggling with Ham, a Rottweiler and notorious Butter Thief. The bottom of the photograph features an inset author photo of Nichole, and text reading "Eat a Stick of Butter Immediately" and "Thoughts from the Writer's Desk" alongside the Ruadรกn Books logo. Read the essay at links.ruadanbooks.com/lightner.
Do you write short fiction? Eat a stick of butter immediately! And read @nicholeon.bsky.social's rules for submitting genre fiction.
It's a tough gig, so you better believe it's worth it.

Two short stories out the door for subs that opened with the new year. Going to work on pulling something together for this month's small press pitch event, too. Starting with enthusiasm. ๐
Boosting this again because really, I would love ideas for places to send it!
Otherwise, that one may be self-pubbed in 2026. We'll see what the year holds.
Best wishes for the New Year to you all!
Another 2025 thing; I took back the rights to my novel The Tiger Line w/o it being published. I'm looking for a new home for it; if anyone knows of a press that might be interested in a mosaic novel, eco-fiction, post-societal-collapse that focuses on human diversity and persistence, let me know!

2025 in publishing:
- Three short stories published! Links downthread.
"The Blue Market" @hexagonmagazine.bsky.social; "Sun Flowers" @lunastation.bsky.social; and "Things in Threes" @nightshadesmag.bsky.social Very proud of all of these.
- Self-published my short story collection Gift Horses. Link:
Was about to send this manuscript off to one more small press as its last chance before I either selfpub it or just stash it as dead, and then saw a stern post about how anyone who bothers publishers in December should go sit in a corner and think about it. ๐ Oh. Right. Learn something new.
Very sad to see this, it was wonderful working with Inner Worlds. Best wishes to Sarah. โค๏ธ
Apparently I have sold one copy of my book this month, which made me smile on a rough day. Thank you, mystery buyer!

@katefrancia.bsky.social I have another fantasy story that features blackwork embroidery as a plot point; it's in an anthology and not available online, but I love using fiberwork/crafts in sff!
Boosting this translation project for #GivingTuesday. Literature in translation always brings fascinating things to think about! Good for your brain and also fun to do!
the book piracy discourse has been quite the read the last day or two. as have the people completely missing the point. never change, people missing the point.
Another manuscript submission out; yay for simsubs. Now back to the next thing...
Did a writing retreat this weekend and wrote 18k on a novella project! It will need a lot of fleshing out in good time but for now I'm really pleased with getting so much of the skeleton in place.
I love sword and sorcery so much. A great thread.
A second fungus SFF story by me is "One Hundred Forty," at Barrelhouse.

I wrote a fungus SFF story a while back; it's available as a radio play, with a link to purchase the issue with the original story on the same page:

My (as yet still in progress) fantasy epic has one! She's of spiritual importance. :D
And the second November manuscript sub is on its way. A good start to the month.

If you need an extra reason to take the jump and give them a try, I could use a few sales to hit Draft2Digital's new payout minimum. ๐
