5/ The profoundly evil nature of this story does not authorize us to believe anything and everything. The function of conspiracy theories is precisely to act as a cognitive barrier to rational analysis of certain perceptions and to protect power.
4/ But the conspiracy theorists were not right. While they were hurling random accusations and instrumentalizing the shock generated by real horrors - pedophilia and the sex trafficking of minors - the Epstein case unfolded along a different track: that of journalistic and judicial investigations.
3/ They ensnare people in their own psychological reward mechanisms: the more unbelievable a “revelation" sounds, the more viral it becomes on social media, and the greater the sense of moral gratification, an endless escalation in which the goal is not truth, but its performance.
2/ This is precisely the emotional spiral that professional conspiracy theorists seek to fuel: exploiting the chaotic release of documents to recruit new followers. And they are succeeding, reaching a generally moderate audience that would usually remain beyond the grasp of their propaganda.
1/ The Epstein case has produced a kind of conspiratorial normalization: almost everyone is now “doing their own research,” often stumbling into blunders or misunderstandings that nonetheless seem to vindicate supporters of Pizzagate or QAnon.
