Guest Gist: Empires of Certainty Dermot Casey responds to "The Age of Diagnosis" and its suggestions that there are just too many ADHD people around these days. This is the Gist.

Thank you. I wrote this last year re ADHD and over diagnosis claims. It touches on Autism as the book I wrote about made similar claims to Firth www.thegist.ie/guest-gist-e... I noticed I keep pointing back to it. With a very neuro diverse family I found challenging my anger healthy so wrote this

referred to as camouflaging in academic writing. Did another edit pass. Did use two LLMs ChatGPT and Claude to look at what I'd written and see if I'd missed anything. Did some ordering changes. Then fired up my blog which involved resetting my account, changing the theme and upgrading loads of 3/4

and also based a chunk of the argument off the piece I wrote in the Gist last year www.thegist.ie/guest-gist-e... and going back over some sections of Empires of Normailty by Robert Chapman (one of the most underlined books I own). I aslo went down some rabbit holes (I didn't know Masking is 2/4

First pass was 35 minutes or so in the car talking to Otter which did a voice transcription of my thoughts. That gave me a lot of words and not great structure. Second pass involved looking for evidence using Google Scholar, Sci Hub and yep LLMs. I read any sources that I used or referred to 1/4

Partially as I see people I respect like @wiringthebrain.bsky.social @hetanshah.bsky.social sharing something deeply problematic

I read (a lot) and my kids read a fair bit through school. I never understood this dress up as your favourite character bit. Bring in a favourite book. Get people to swap books. Give out comics and graphic novels. All things that will encourage reading....

I think she’s well intended and incredibly dismissive of an awful lot of autistic people. I’ll come back with some specific points of criticism later when I’m not in the car.

working in GE I learned you never said "it'll be done in January" you said "it'll be done in Q1" which created a buffer of Feb & March
