Recurrent introgression and geographical stratification shape Saccharomyces cerevisiae in the Neotropics - Nature Communications Introgression shapes eukaryotic genomes, yet its prevalence in nature remains unclear. Sequencing 216 Neotropical S. cerevisiae genomes reveals that recurrent introgression is widespread and a major d...

The most recent publication from my former PhD advisor Eugenio Mancera together with great scientists such as @lumoralesr.bsky.social, Alexander De Luna and Abraham Avelar. It was a great adventure to see all this science happening in real time.

APSPM brought together researchers from around the world to explore protein evolution from different angles. Structural approaches are reshaping evolutionary inference and the community is growing. Huge thanks to participants and @official-smbe.bsky.social for making this meeting a success.

Coffee agrosystems with cover trees, a common practice in Veracruz, Mexico. Shows better soil parameters and plants health leading to sustainable management.
This project was a little step to recognize this traditional practices as an important ecological contribución.

Cover trees association changed bacterial diversity in coffee production systems Traditional coffee agroforestry systems often involve shade trees, which play a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility and biodiversity. In contrast, monoculture systems negatively influence soil ...

Last year I moved to metagenomics and field work, today as a result i'm excited to share this preprint in which we highligth the traditional coffee agrosystems effects on soil health and bacterial diversity.

A radical evolutionary makeover gave echinoderms their unusual body plan Gene-expression maps show how starfish evolved their five-fold symmetry.

Echinoderms already undergo large-scale metamorphosis during larval development, so there are lots of gene 'switches' that produce different patterning.

The loss of a few of these (say, for "trunk") creates an animal that is a sort of "Oops, All-Arms!" body plan.

Hawaiian bobtail squid maintain distinct microbiota in different organs, including bioluminescent bacteria in their light organs, by deploying immune factors with tailored expressions in each niche. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/QxLo50XPnyS

Migration is widespread in animals, but little is known about its genetic regulation. Peralta et al. compared genomes of lesser long-nosed bats, identifying 10 genomic regions with signatures of selection linked to migration.
