they read stories they wrote, then I showed them how to add sound fx.. was demoing how you could record different types of sounds to represent other things, and how they could manipulate common objects in various ways to get different sounds.. one example I used was blowing a cymbal...

not that related but I once was a visiting artist to a kids summer arts program - 2nd to 4th grade-ish. Theme for the program was storytelling, each week a different type of artist visited, showing how their craft might be used, my bit was talking Foley..
