I did some research a few years ago with Kuhelika De and Ryan Compton on the effects of oil price shocks. Perhaps of interest to some of you now.

Quietly, calmly and forensically, BBC just dismantled the Trump communications shitshow on Iran.
No hyperbole, just laying out an unprecedented military, diplomatic and reputational shambles.
Worth a watch.

Congrats to Franjo von Allmen of Switzerland for winning gold in the men's Olympic downhill.
Congrats even more to my Swiss wife who exhibited unbridled joy** at this outcome.
**Unbridled joy by Swiss-German standards which means she smiled with quiet excitement. πππ
My first tweet from back in August 2017. It reads "I wish I had something exquisitely pithy to write for #myfirsttweet, but my mind is mostly preoccupied with what a disgrace the POTUS is.
This was my first tweet on the other site. I would say that some things never change, but they have... and they have gotten much worse.
At this stage, my main consolation is that ESPN+ televises all of the Bundesliga 2 matches.
(But I am looking forward to attending FCH's matches in Munich and Cologne in May.)
As a FC Heidenheim supporter, it was sadly not that overly surprising to see them miss so many finishes.
But it was an entertaining match.

At halftime, I decided to boot up my computer just so I could do this. You're welcome. #NCAAFB #CFP #Doink @sarahspain.com @cjzero.bsky.social
Frodo: I wish so much unbelievably stupid shit had not happened in my time Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. This is all exceptionally stupid, though
I have a brother who lives in Seattle too! I grew up in southern Illinois, and while I am not a Bears fan, many of my friends are and so I could at least be happy for them if the Bears won.
Seahawks are the only team I want to win. I could perhaps tolerate anyone but the Pats or Rams.
"you know forty years is a whole lifetime; you know it is extreme old age. To live longer than forty years is bad manners, is vulgar, immoral. Who does live beyond forty? Answer that, sincerely and honestly I will tell you who do: fools and worthless fellows."

As an American, I am disgusted by what the president and his administration are doing right now. I am also appalled that Congress and the Supreme Court is doing very little to stop him. It is embarrassing and I'm not sure if we will ever regain the trust of our friends.
I will note that I also just watched the Wolfsburg - St. Pauli match. π€ͺ
It me.
As an FC Heidenheim "mitglied" I approve of this alternative ranking.
WOB exists to give FC Heidenheim supporters a faint glimmer of hope.
I was about to post the same thing. That is basically a -27 yard mistake.
It looks fine over here in west Michigan.
This is actually what much of the world is saying about the US.
I can imagine a conversation like this happening between the prof and the administration: www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yKA...
The FCS Championship game is almost as crazy as the Steelers-Ravens game last night.
OK, this great advice except that when I tried to get a COVID-19 vaccination this past fall my doctor said that my insurance likely wouldn't cover it and the cost to me would be about $250.
On Christmas morning 2014 I bent over to pick up some wrapping paper and banged my head against the corner of a wall. Had to go to urgent care to get a half-dozen stitches in the center of my forehead. (Not sure if it makes it better or worse, but I was perfectly sober when this happened.)
A modern day "Saint Monday".
It's not as red as you might think:
While west Michigan in general is quite conservative, the City of Grand Rapids itself voted almost overwhelmingly for Harris as opposed to Trump in 2024 (69.4% Harris to 28.8% Trump).
Even in Kent County overall, the vote was for Harris 51.5% to 46.7% for Trump.
Graph of world literacy rates from 1950 to 2023 showing a monotonic increase from below 40% to above 80%.
Graph of the % of the world's population living in extreme poverty (defined as having an income of less than $3 per day) from 1990 to 2025 showing a decrease from above 40% to just about 10%.

I understand your sentiment and I agree that many things are getting a lot worse (and rather quickly). Still, it brings me at least a little comfort to know that some important things have gotten better for many billions of people around the world.
Graphs are from the excellent ourworldindata.org
Perhaps they will try to win viewers back by ending each episode with commentary given by an AI version of Andy Rooney.
And FC Heidenheim hasn't lost a game!
