I didn't learn about the roots of Iran until a got to college. My 20th century history class in 1990s HS was basically WWI, the Great Depression, Spanish Civil War, WWII, Korea, Civil Rights & Vietnam shared a segment, and then a blurb about religious fundamentalists overthrowing the Shah.
