Reframing the free will debate: the universe is not deterministic - Synthese
Synthese - Free will discourse is primarily centred around the thesis of determinism. Much of the literature takes determinism as its starting premise, assuming it true โfor the sake of...
Indeterminism means pervasive indefiniteness, not determinism-plus-randomness. Henry Potter, @wiringthebrain.bsky.social & George Ellis explain why this is so and what it implies for the free will debate in their new paper in my Topical Collection, see link.springer.com/article/10.1... #FreeWill

Philosophical figures like Anil Seth have recently popularised the idea that โreality is a controlled hallucinationโ. | https://bit.ly/4buN5ky
However, @evanthompson.bsky.social argues that this claim is bad philosophy, and brings nothing new to the table regarding the problem of consciousness.

Causal regularities may constrain the mapping but don't determine it (because an observer can always establish a different mapping, weird though it might be).

But one still has to establish a mapping from trajectories to symbols and laws to formal rules. A trajectory as such is not a symbol (a purely formally individuated item in a code that is semantically interpretable), and a law as such is not a formal rule. +

I'm really just repeating John Searle's argument that syntax isn't intrinsic to physics, which seems right to me, though virtually nobody else thinks so!

I think some mappings from syntax to physics will be more tightly constrained and well-motivated by models than others, but as a matter of principle you can map a very simple system onto (say) a Turing machine

"Results show that for every reported professional benefit that scientists once gained from Twitter, scientists can now gain that benefit more effectively on Bluesky than on Twitter."
