'To end austerity, wealth taxes are a moral and economic necessity' - LabourList Wealth taxes aren’t a silver bullet but they are a crucial piece in the puzzle, helping raise the money needed to deliver real change and signal to the public that we are on their side.

Three out of the six declared candidates for the deputy leadership of Labour back a wealth tax: Emily Thornberry, Bell Ribeiro-Addy and Paula Barker.

Here is Bell on why she wants the UK to introduce a wealth tax:

This is the Green party’s moment – not Farage’s. As leader, I’ll offer real solutions to Britain’s problems | Zack Polanski For too long, the richest in this country have accumulated wealth at the expense of the poorest. It can’t go on like this, says Zack Polanski, leader of the Green party

On the day of his election as leader of the Green Party, @zackpolanski.bsky.social has chosen to write for the Guardian not about the environment, but about how to tax wealth. This is a moment, for Labour, for the unions and for those they choose to finance.

The UK Anti-SLAPP Coalition welcomes the judgment in the legal action brought against The Guardian by Noel Clarke - UK Anti-Slapp Coalition The UK Anti-SLAPP Coalition welcomes the High Court’s judgement that found in favour of The Guardian in relation to the legal action brought by the actor, producer and filmmaker, Noel Clarke.

"Without meaningful anti-SLAPP protections that can level the playing field and make sure the justice system serves everyone equally, there are few structural protections to prevent this happening again. For that reason we need a universal anti-SLAPP law without delay."

How Spain put up wealth taxes - without chasing away the billionaires Amid calls for Rachel Reeves to bring in a new levy for the super-rich, Madrid offers lessons for policymakers

It’s the big question for the chancellor - should Rachel Reeves bring in a UK wealth tax?

I looked at Spain, which has had one for years, and increased it after Covid. The result? It doesn’t raise much, but it’s popular, and there was no billionaire exodus.

Lords watchdog investigates Tory peer over ‘erroneous’ travel claims Earl of Shrewsbury is fifth peer to face an inquiry after Guardian reporting into upper house The House of Lords watchdog has launched an investigation into a Conservative hereditary peer who admitted he “erroneously” made claims last year for travel expenses he did not incur. He is the fifth peer to face an inquiry after Guardian reporting into the upper house. The Earl of Shrewsbury is being examined for a potential breach of rules after revelations he received reimbursement for mileage for four journeys between his home in Derbyshire and Stafford station, which he cannot have made as he was either in London or Liverpool. Ian Duncan, a Conservative peer who helped to secure a meeting with a government minister for a Canadian nuclear technology company he was advising. Richard Dannatt, a former head of the army who offered to secure meetings with ministers for undercover Guardian reporters posing as commercial clients wanting to lobby the government. David Evans of Watford, a Labour peer who referred himself to the watchdog after facing cash-for-access questions following undercover filming with Lord Evans. Continue reading...

Russia is holding thousands of Ukrainian civilians captive. They are local politicians, retired police officers, small business owners, community activists. Anyone likely to oppose the occupation.

They are ghost prisoners. Held without charge, without access to lawyers or to their families.
