I'm not convinced by Carbon Capture, so there are genuine discussions to be had. But the "ripped up" headlines and people furious about a temporary haul road are beyond tedious. Unfortunately both Hynet and Peak Cluster are on my doorstep, so my FB timeline is full of it.

On one side of the country we've got angry locals saying "just bury cables", on the other side people are furious about a temporary haul road required to bury a pipe. And then people complain that it takes so long to build anything in this country. ๐คฆ

Everyone's first reaction to seeing this dreaded message. Changing the company name hasn't stopped parcels from going missing. I know they're cheap, but why do reputable companies use them, the loss rates must counter the cost?

Why do people fall for this?
It's a cult.
Brit-MAGA, no critical thinking beyond "I hate foreign people", and stuck in forever victim mode.
They don't want to improve their own lives, because it's easier to hate everyone else than look in a mirror and ask what went wrong to lead them here.

I know I have a partner who works in the energy sector and I naturally pay attention to things like this. But surely the energy crisis should've woken people up to the fact that electricity prices are linked directly to gas prices because of our over reliance on gas for generation.

Actual visible signs of progress at #Chester station. It feels like this modest "upgrade" has been going on for years.

All the people today saying that extracting more North Sea gas will mean cheaper energy bills are lying to you.

I think the connection to Euston Square and the enlarged Northern line entrance is vital. So hopefully it will form part of the overall plan. Especially in the absence of Crossrail 2. During my visit the Underground entrance was overwhelmed at 11am!

No, the new stations will have 400m long platforms. There shouldn't be an issue building a mixture of 250m and 200 long units.

That's quite alright. I really don't mind trying to explain things as best I can. It's such a mess at the moment.

It should be straightforward to add 2 extra carriages to some trains. I believe discussions have been underway for some time, but it's all behind closed doors. At best even 250m sets could be described as an interim solution, we still need HS2 to Crewe, Manchester & Golborne (for Glasgow to benefit)

I just think it's his obsession about speed and specification. With the assertion being that HS2 was over-specified, which it wasn't. Stafford is already setting itself up to oppose any link to Crewe, so the DfT will still have to battle local politicians.

Absolutely, I would very much hope some 200m long sets are retained for Birmingham. Curzon St station will still have 400m long platforms, as will Old Oak Common and new Euston HS2 platforms

That's what people like myself and Gareth have been saying for some time. But any discussions are happening behind closed doors. Alstom/Hitachi won't want to make any significant changes to the contract for free. Then theres depots & maintenance to consider, not insurmountable, but a sticking point

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to make excuses and Hendy in particular has made the situation worse with his "HS2 is too fast" and "it can't be HS2" comments, only to backtrack and say we need HS2 to Manchester! But I can understand why Lab haven't reversed Sunak's decision.

So it's likely based on the HS2 reference train (Bombardier Zefiro) the DfT will (if they do order longer trains) opt for 250m long (625 seat capacity) units, taking into account unit formation and carriage length. 2/2

11 car Cl390s are long longest that can fit in most WCML platforms. There are the some longer platforms on the WCML, but you can't operate services based on the fact that a station may have one 300m long platform. Remember HS2 services will serve most WCML stations currently service by Avanti 1/2

Based on the most recent capacity assumption for #HS2 stock and post-refurb increase in cl390 seating , the reduction in seating capacity for Manchester based on 3tph would be considerable. (Seating capacity can be a red herring, but it is still and important metric)

Essentially - it's what people like me and @railfocus.bsky.social have been saying since the major section cancellations under Sunak. HS2 spec was 2*200m formations. Cancel the HS2 legs and station expansions at Crewe, Manchester (let alone Leeds and Glasgow) and you suddenly have...
