The last two minutes of Park Chan-Wookβs No Other Choice? Wow that was brilliantβsending chills up my spine
βhobbistβ, βactivisticβ, βme-studiesββ¦ so many pretenses to just write off an entire area of research as βnot academicβ
Recently experienced gatekeeping by Western scholarsβwas accused of writing like an activist rather than an academic. This narrative is not even original. Is this perhaps what every non-white researcher working on ethnic and critical race studies has to go through in Western academia??
I remember seeing him on stage earlier this year at the Berlinale, when he took his Satanische Sau to the festival. Listening to him talk I was struck by how energetic and full of life he was, which shines through his filmmaking as wellβSatanische Sau is just as bold and defiant.
Humanities where the cool jobs at
I also finally liked reading literature after I stopped studying/writing about it. Itβs funny to think there were a couple of years in my life when I absolutely hated reading haha
Iβve been going to the cinema a lot lately. Itβs funny how I never had time to watch many films when I was writing my dissertation in film studiesβ¦ like they say: never make your hobbies your career. It just spoils all the fun.
When ChatGPT was asked to rate 40,000 rΓ©sumΓ©s, it ranked the older male candidates as better quality than the younger female applicants.

YouTube screen grab of Zohran Mamdani in tight close-up, with the top comment below saying βWhatβs weird is Iβm not Muslim, but this video makes me feel comforted.β
Really want to write something about the Mamdani campaignβs use of the close-up + direct address as a way to mediate particularity and identity.
This is not a flattened universal spectatorial positionβviewers become MORE aware of their own identity, not less. And curiously that informs solidarity.
I realized today that my article on source study and the plot of romeo and juliet was published online a few days ago! i'm very proud of this one & if you're working on R+J or teaching the play, please check it out
Tomorrow is the first event in the Research Seminar Series I've convened with Oliver Dixon, for Cambridge Film and Screen. Very excited for a busy term ahead, all welcome!
Also Cambridge rental market is abysmalβ¦
House viewing is so stressfulβ¦ itβs probably a bad idea to do thesis submission, job applications, and house viewings at the same time π
Huge congratulations!! So Proud of you Dr Goh:)
teachers!
excited to share a new website at this late date of Aug 15 to try to help us collectively prepare for back to school in the interpretative humanities classroom assaulted by the AI grift, so we don't have to go it alone.
take a look, share, + most importantly: CONTRIBUTE

Taner Akçam, Marianne Hirsch, and I introduce the Genocide and Holocaust Studies Crisis Network and call for immediate concrete measures to prevent further atrocity crimes and to protect civilians in Gaza.
Photo of a tv. Onscreen a woman holds an axe with a periodic table visible behind.
Buffy is so old there were only 103 named elements, weβre at 118 now.
(Yes I pause every show that has a periodic table to see if its period accurate)
The cover for the upcoming volume "The Campus Crisis Toolkit: Strategies and Solidarity for the Rest of Us"

With 25 chapters from over 40 contributors, the book tackles everything from anti-DEI laws to consultants and cuts to campus violence (1/2)
Look, I get it. Thanks THI for running these numbers. But itβs just so frigging depressing to measure scholarship and learning by $$. We Humanitarians profit the world in other ways too. π
France will recognize Palestine as a state, amid snowballing global anger over people starving in Gaza.
βThe urgent thing today is that the war in Gaza stops and the civilian population is saved.β³
France has Europeβs largest Jewish population & largest Muslim population in western Europe.
βWe love your argument but we hate your text. Can you do this on a different (group of) text(s)β
How do you figure I came up with this argument?
