These California Condors Might Be Tending to the Species' First Egg in the State's Northern Region in More Than a Century Experts haven't confirmed the existence of an egg, but the nesting birds' behaviors suggest one was laid in early February

In 1982, there were only 22 individuals left. A captive breeding program has brought that number up to 607. There have already been nests from condors released further south; but this is potentially the first wild condor egg in northern California in 100 years. 🥚

This is the result of YEARS of dedicated efforts by the Aotearoa NZ conservation team. We can't count their chicks before they hatch, or even before they fledge...but it's a wonderful thing to see.

This year, the breeding population of kākāpō has already laid 81 (fertile) eggs and counting. This might not seem like a lot until you remember that in 1995 there were only 51 kākāpō remaining, total.

The kākāpō breeding season is well under way! If you don't know, kākāpō are these amazing giant, flightless, nocturnal parrots in Aotearoa New Zealand that almost went extinct. Dedicated recovery efforts are bringing them back. As you can see here, every nest is being monitored, every egg checked.💚🦜

"Sharing food among relatives and other orcas is foundational for the whales, and in attempting to provision humans with prey...it could be an example of the whales practicing a cultural behaviour or exploring humans’ capacity to respond."

I am once again delighted by whale news: orcas have been trying to share their food with humans!

The new study looks at 34 cases of orcas approaching people and offering up bits of meat or whole prey, sometimes repeatedly.

The report says that there have been 12 cases of them doing this during friendly encounters with humans where they appeared "curious"
