60 years later, #Canada wants to build its first high-speed rail route, between #Quebec City and #Toronto.

Landowners are protesting. (In ways they don't when highways are built.)

I look at history of opposition to railways in this High Speed newsletter:

Opinion: Now is not the time for more pipelines

My piece in today's @winnipegfreepress.com - the shills for fossil fuels are using the war to argue for more pipelines. Nonsense. We should be headed in the opposite direction as fast as possible: more #renewables, more decarbonization, more energy security.

“Spatial justice demands that all residents have substantive access to essential goods and services: Clean air, affordable housing, public transport, green spaces, and safe infrastructures.

It insists these rights be pursued in ways that preserve ecological integrity and intergenerational equity.”

Ever wondered why you can see underwater bubbles: invisible air in invisible water?
It's because light bends slightly at the boundary between air & water, so light coming from behind the bubble is diverted away from your eye. The resulting dark line shows you the bubble must be there. Beautiful!

“At the @urbantruth.bsky.social we want to change the narrative - call out the lies and the liars not just clarify and fact check! Better cities have been held back by lies, and we’ve had enough of that - NO MORE!”

FACT CHECK: This is a doctored photo. Mark Carney is NOT Poseidon, god of seas and storms, and my analysis reveals his head is not larger than a beach-breaking wave.

The house next to mine is being redeveloped into 9 apartments. The one two doors down will go from one unit to four. Neither is adding parking, but they’ll have bike storage. That’s 11 new homes with no new road required! Millions saved! But *not* building highways is called irresponsible.

Cities offer great ways to control the cost of gas. Most of them residents have already paid for.

One of the absolute joys of being a city councillor in #yyc was there were no parties. Peter Demong was one of my favourite people to work with. Under a party system I doubt that would have been true. Obviously, the public felt that was true as well. #yyccc

Ireland's basic income for artists changed my life. Other people deserve the same luck | Caelainn Hogan A pilot scheme offering some artists €300-plus a week for three years is being made permanent. But should something so fundamental be run like a lottery, asks writer Caelainn Hogan

"The basic income was life-changing. Only months into the scheme, I found out I was pregnant. The basic income helped me decide to have my baby, knowing I could continue creative work and keep my small studio space... The basic income gave me more freedom to experiment in my work."

DO UBI FOR ALL.
