Nova Scotians will not let up protesting until all cuts are reversed #HoustonCuts

So far $56 million were reversed, still pushing for the rest to be reversed.
I remember that stage. π¬
Indeed.
I got to the rally late as I was at City Hall but itβs still going.
The prediction is for a lot of chilly rain with a few flurries, so Iβd guess not high? But a shift of a few degrees lower would change that, of course, so stay tuned.
A full Sea Smoke restaurant patio with other pedestrians along the waterfront. The sky is blue and cloudless.
Patchy snow on the little hill on the waterfront with people sitting in the colourful umbrella chairs. The sky is blue and cloudless.
Kids playing on the wave sculpture without jackets on, with patchy snow at the base of it. The sky is blue and cloudless.
Faux spring has the Halifax waterfront hopping!
Every second person Iβve seen today has had a protest sign under their arm
PREMIERβS OFFICE/FINANCE/TREASURY BOARD--$53.6 Million in Grants, Funding Reinstated ------------------------------------------------------ The Province will reinstate $53.6 million in grants and funding to support people with disabilities, seniors and education initiatives for 2026-27. βNova Scotians have spoken. We listened, and we are reinstating supports to disabilities programming, seniors programming and African Nova Scotian and Indigenous students. These are grants that help people meet their basic daily needs,β said Premier Tim Houston. βWe wish we could do more. We will continue to look for opportunities to support all Nova Scotians as our fiscal picture improves.β The government is reinstating $21.4 million in grants to support seniors and people with disabilities, and to help African Nova Scotians and Indigenous people access educational opportunities. Another $10 million will go back to organizations that support those groups. It is also re-establishing $22.2 million in funding to community programs that support seniors, disability groups and the African Nova Scotian and Indigenous communities. The deficit will now stand at $1.24 billion before contingency.
The Houston government has backed down ever so slightly. Notably, cuts to arts grants are not restored:

βBusiness casesβ π€¬ A π GOVERNMENTπ IS π NOT π A π BUSINESS π
We give taxes to governments so they can do what businesses canβt. Provide vital services to everyone, not just those who can pay. Teach kids our history and traditions. Give dignity to seniors. Make this a safe and decent place to live.
Our two LOVE the outside and one of them especially will stand by the harness and beg all summer! But the leftover snow and mud is too much. They will have to take their enjoyment from open windows for now.
Same here. When we moved here in 2024, we did have two solid incomes (and still do), but weβre older than you two. Taking on an exorbitant new mortgage in your 50s without generational wealth is a huge risk. The lack of car is what makes it manageable.
I think about this all the time. Not owning a car is how we could afford to live on the peninsula, for one.
Faux spring!
Gorgeous!
Damn right we are, eh? π¨π¦

Grrrr
If I were voting, Iβd have similar feelings, I think. Among the candidates are one person I know personally (and like), plus another I had a huge intellectual crush on about twenty years ago. (Specifics omitted to protect the guilty π)
This past Christmas, Halifax Mayor Andy Fillmore gave councillors copies of a self-help book. In this satirical essay, @philmoscovitch.bsky.social imagines himself being a recipient of this gift.
This is why we say it
So warm but soooo windy!
My research group meets at 9am Edmonton time every Tuesday. Sadly, this is also noon tomorrow in Halifax. My heart will be at the protest, though. I hope itβs even bigger than the last one.
I love this story!
Itβs glorious!
Definitely this.
