this government will go very far in reversing what in many ways seems to be an inexorable slide into fascist dictatorship or a second civil war.
When asked what kind of government the United States had decided on, Ben Franklin is said to have quipped, “a democracy, if you can keep it.”
I believe that, in this moment, congress has the opportunity to change the trajectory of this country. If you and your colleagues can reassert your role as the first among co-equals in the structure of our democracy, especially through the power of the purse,
Necessary functions, such as TSA, CBP and a reconstituted INS can be folded into another department, but DHS must be torn out, root and stem.
This is the only remedy to the events occurring in Minneapolis, Maine, and many other places, including here, in the greater Grand Rapids area.
I also want to urge you, in the strongest possible terms, that what is needed to to fully safeguard our rights and the soul of this republic is not just the abolition of ICE, but the complete dismantling of DHS. The twenty-some year experiment that is DHS has failed and it must be scrapped.
I want to thank you for you outspokenness for the civil liberties of Michiganders, of which I am newly a member, and all the people of the United States, citizens or not, in opposing the actions of the ICE, which in any other country would be called paramilitary, in Minneapolis.
Please steal bits that seem useful to you, cut/paste, whatever it takes but contact you representatives. This can be an inflection point but we must press for it.
