Faculty are often (almost always) reqβd to include course evals in their annual reviews, p&t packets, often considered for teaching awards, etc. For contingent fac., they are often the sole determinant for rehire for following semesters.
Low response rates, self report, uncalibrated instruments, small sample sizes, ordinal data, over-interpretation of small differences with no attempt to detect statistical significanceβ¦
DONβT GET ME STARTED ON THE DOCUMENTED BIAS AGAINST WOMEN AND FACULTY OF COLOR!!
On the subject of course evals: Academics, we are smart people trained in research methods and data analysis.
So why do we (the entire academic enterprise) forget all of those principles when in comes to course eval data?!
