Our 2025 State of the Climate Report was just published in BioScience by scientists from around the world including @michaelemann.bsky.social @petergleick.bsky.social This video (2 minutes) shows the key highlights: doi.org/10.1093/bios...
Open Letter by scientists to the Council:
"Climate Neutrality Is Europe’s Greatest Economic Opportunity”.
Ahead of the European Council meeting on 23.10.2025,
2,178 scientists urge EU Heads of States & Governments to take ambitious decisions for the 2040 targets.

We analyses the Global Forest Watch map of forest loss (satellite based) and the compulsory notifications of forestry operations, and overlap them with the prioritization map of high biodiversity value forest produced by the Finnish Environement Institute @syke.fi

Our latest research shows that harvesting in Finland also takes place in forests of high biodiversity value, which highlights the need to integrate biodiversity conservation more closely into forest management practices.

🌲An researchers has investigated the conservation of biodiversity in European forests using empirical data and virtual forest landscapes. Intensive harvesting does not threaten overal forest diversity if enough unmanaged forest is also present in the landscape. ➡️ r.jyu.fi/Gp5 @remiduflot.bsky.social
When someone mentioned Landscape Features in agricultural landscape, what image do you see in your mind?
If we say that Landscape Features can be part of viable rural areas, what would be your vision on this?
Join us on Tuesday, 14.10 at 10am to speak about it!

Front cover of the European Butterfly Red List, showing Polyommatus humedasae. The report can be downloaded at https://www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?name=red-list-butterflies-2025
The new European Butterfly Red List is published today, with worrying findings. Over 1/4 (28%) of Europe’s 442 species are threatened with extinction or are close to being so. The situation is far worse for our 148 endemic species, 40% are now threatened or nearly so www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...
The press release of a recent study I led is now online. It explains in an accessible, non-academic way what we did and what we found !
🙏This work would not have been possible without the contribution of many co-authors and the Bottoms-Up COST Action (www.bottoms-up.eu/en/) led by @sabina-burrascano.bsky.social
📈
- Extensively managed forests contributed little to support species richness of any of the studied taxonomic groups.
📈The main findings are:
- Unmanaged forests are the “backbone” of biodiversity conservation
- it is possible to maintain a certain proportion of forest area dedicated to timber production without compromising overall forest biodiversity
🛠️We mobilized multi-taxonomic biodiversity observations from the Bottoms-up database and develop a ‘‘virtual” landscape approach (i.e., data resampling). We created landscapes that vary in proportion of extensively, intensively, and unmanaged forests, and explored the whole range of possibilities.
🔔New paper out in PNAS !
We investigated how the Triad landscape zoning can support multi-taxonomic biodiversity in European beech forests.🌳🌳
🪵 We recommend increasing the area of unmanaged forests and improved extensive practices.

This is exactly what they taught me at the agricultural engineering school nearly 20y ago !!
This doesn't solve the greenhouse gas emission though...🤔
It was a pleasure to work with the Bottoms-up cost action consortium !
Thank you for having me and the great opportunity.
Joining forces and sharing biodiversity data is very important. It is the only way to make large powerful datasets allowing to test hypotheses at large scale. As we did here !

Last year we published a paper on butterflies and moths biodiversity in Finnish municipality. 🦋
Which municipality do you think have the highest species richness?

Made it to Montpellier yesterday... What a trip !!🤘
Early morning again for the third day of the trip, in the impressive train station of Hambourg. Only three more trains to go and a metro connection in Paris. Uff!
Uptake!
After a (very) short night on the ferry, I am now in foggy Stockholm. Easy connection to train station (local bus + metro). Two long train trips for me today.
First step of my slow-travel trip from Jyväskylä (Central Finland) to Montpellier (Southern France): taking a local bus to the train station, heading to Turku.
