at first to get into it, but once I got used to the moveset and everything clicked, it was impossible to put down until I had every doodad I could possibly get my little spider hands on. All the years of waiting and memeing were worth it.

🏆1. Hollow Knight: Silksong (2025)🕸️
Atmosphere, challenge, worldbuilding, a little bit of developer-sanctioned player hating... this is video games. Hollow Knight was a masterpiece, and this game follows up on that in every way and more. Just like the prequel, it was a bit of a struggle (1/2)

🥈2. Deltarune Chapters 3 + 4 (2025)📺
I don't know how they do it, but the balance of 90% zany humor and 10% real shit is perfectly tuned to my brain wavelength. I love how every battle is a Touhou boss fight. I love the dialogue, I love the characters and their designs, I love feeling things.

🥉3. Donkey Kong Bananza (2025)👊
What if you took DK64 and made it Mario Odyssey instead? It is 2025 and the collectathon platformer is not dead. The pacing was a bit weird sometimes, but something about this game gave me the same feeling I had playing Banjo-Kazooie on the N64 as a kid. Ohhh, banana!

4. Animal Well (2024)🦘
This game nails atmosphere from start to finish. Even though I wasn't clever enough to solve a lot of the puzzles myself, I felt like the game was just content to let the experience wash over me as I looked around in wonder and dove ever deeper in my Easter egg hunt.

5. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown (2024)👑
Really it all boils down to the fact that this is just a solid Metroidvania with a great map, really cool movement tech, and interesting puzzles and platform challenges. A rare home-cooked meal from a company all too eager to deliver complacent slop.

6. R.E.P.O. (2025)📦
Working to lift something big before inevitably failing due to some goofy-ahh physics is always funny. Most importantly, the dedicated map button instantly elevates this game above anything like Lethal or Peak because I don't have to rely on my nonexistent sense of direction.

7. Shadow Generations (2024)👿
The levels are designed well, they're not just "hold forward and win." The moveset upgrades you get break up and add to the gameplay. It's just fun to play, that's all I can say. Unlike Frontiers, it doesn't wear out its welcome and stays fresh from start to finish.

8. Bits & Bops (2025)🎶
Rhythm Heaven is a series so good, I just need more of it. My obligatory rhythm game pick this year goes to this fun little minigame collection that isn't shy at all about showing its inspiration. The soundtrack is great and the art is wonderful. Go for a Perfect!

9. Mario Kart World (2025)🚗
There's something about going into free roam mode and driving around looking for hidden coins and challenges that makes the hours fly. The soundtrack pulls from every Mario-adjacent game into a beautiful 200-track Casiopea jazz fusion/big band odyssey. OST of the year!

10. Xanthiom Zero (2023)🔫
Every year I try to play at least one short and weird little Metroidlike nobody's ever heard of, and this year's selection was a nice little pixel love letter to the original game that started the genre. A cheap 4-6 hour game with pretty cool weapon customization options!

🏆 Rivals of Aether (Aether Studios, 2017) - It's like Smash, but they took out shielding, grabs, and ledges, so now you have to parry and wall jump instead. Getting better at this game over the past year was like going on a journey. I gotta give props to the original over 2...for now.

🥈 Rivals of Aether II (Aether Studios, 2024) - The Smash clone. It's good. It's very good. It's not number 1 good, but it's getting constant updates and I think it'll really reach its true potential over the next few years if it gets the continual love and support the devs say they plan to put in.

🥉 Pseudoregalia (rittzler, 2023) - Now this is what I call a Metroidvania. Crazy movement options, a neat low-poly aesthetic, and a liminal space of a world that you can just run around and parkour in as much as you want for about 8 hours.

4. OneShot (Future Cat, 2016) - Any description I could give would either not do it justice or spoil the heartrending story the devs managed to craft. So I'll just tell you to play it for yourself. An upgraded version with Steam Deck support just came out(like two months after I played it)!

5. Undertale Yellow (Team Undertale Yellow, 2023) - Somehow this fangame managed to capture the magic of Undertale and distill it into a side story with great original characters, bopping tunes, unique battles, and an interesting new story back in Toby Fox's classic world of the Underground.

6. Lone Fungus (Basti Games, 2023) - With a classic, sprawling map with powerups galore, cool movement options that build on each other, and devious hidden challenges, this little hidden Metroidvania doesn't overstay its welcome at around 15-20 hours.

7. Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain (Extremely OK Games, 2024) - There weren't many games I played that scratched the "super hard platformer" itch in 2024, so this game that came out early in the year was a much-needed burst of fun, exploration, and some Mario 64/Sunshine nostalgia. Strawb get!

8. Wario Land II (Nintendo, 1998) - Okay, maybe it's the nostalgia talking, but I really love this game. I can't forgive all of the frustrating design decisions that went along with making Wario invincible, but bashing through walls to find hidden caches of coins never gets old.

9. Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time (Toys For Bob, 2021) - It managed to really capture and modernize some of the essence from the first three classic PS1 games. But...I'm not gonna play through the same level 3 times except it's got a stupid insta filter over it now for 100%! Horrible padding.

More on my top 10!

10. Spin Rhythm XD (Super Spin Digital, 2023) - I love rhythm games and this one is a super challenging addition that gives me an excuse to use my trackball mouse. I'm still working on trying to figure everything out so I can even play the hardest difficulty consistently!
